While government data from Brazil suggest that over 800 children under age 9 have died of Covid-19, an expert estimates that the death toll is nearly three times higher.
Dr. Fatima Marinho of the University of São Paolo, a leading epidemiologist who is a senior adviser to the international non-governmental organization Vital Strategies, estimated that the virus has killed 2,060 children under 9, including 1,302 babies. Her estimate is based on the number of excess deaths from an unspecified acute respiratory syndrome during the pandemic.
There is a misconception that children are at zero risk for Covid-19, Marinho told the BBC after she found that there have been 10 times more deaths from an unexplained respiratory syndrome over the past year compared to previous years.
Marinho added that, throughout her research, she has seen a rise in cases of multisystem inflammatory syndrome among Brazilian children. The rare syndrome is a newly identified and serious health condition associated with the virus that causes Covid-19 infections. It tends to affect children up to six weeks after they are infected with the coronavirus....

Things are very bad in Brazil. What we are seeing is what happens when this virus problem isn’t handled well. Eventually the virus will reach down into the younger people. We are witnessing this happen in the 1st world as the vaccines are rolled out. Europe has the right idea to get everyone at least a first dose and then a second dose in 12 weeks.
Our response under Trump wasn’t great, but it wasn’t bad considering we were up against a virus and goofy democrat distractions.
If more needs to be done, what’s the answer?

I wonder how much bad air pollution in cities all over Brasil and India contributes to more severe cases and deaths (though that shouldn’t be a factor in very young children).

I imagine many children in these countries live in crowded areas, with a lot of industrial pollution and many of the children are weakened through poor nutrition. That does not explain it away (”it’s just the flu”) but it likely would make them more vulnerable.
No one really knows. I am in a bit of a gloom and doom mood this morning, but with a virus not acting normally we are not going to beat it as a human race.
In order to beat a bioweapon one has to have the vaccine before it is released. This Wuhan lab 'accident' did not and was not prepared. We are chasing it now and I do not see us getting ahead of it any time soon.

Years ago here on FR we watched an ebola outbreak in Africa (not the recent one, but before even that). One of the things we learned was governments in an outbreak situation never, NEVER, tell the public the truth about the dire circumstances. The truth comes out after the events are over.
I don't trust Fauci, but he also knows a lot more than he is saying. Operation Warp Speed was likely due to Fauci's knowledge of this virus (weapon). You cannot beat a bioweapon chasing it after it has been released. You have to get in front of it.

What other virus can infect every mammal and avian it encounters name one please. This bug has been proven to infect humans, dogs, cats, tigers, minks,cows,pigs, avaians and even bacteria name one other virus that has the genetic tool kit to do this. This bug has been very effective at targeting the lesser desired of a welfare state society namely the elderly and also targets very successfully those who are obese, or have metabolic syndrome which is 40% of adult Americans over 35. It has an R0 on par with measles and is spread via airborne droplets as well as basic respiration particulates just breathing is enough that was proven scientifically many times. Now in a population doing zero to contain it’s spread it has mutated to a form that can target the young and healthy not a surprise at all. The original SARS Covid one that this bug is closely related too and likely was based on in the lab has a 35% fatality rate and kills young and healthy people with ease. When not if this bug evolves back to it’s roots it will become much more fatal if it keeps the ability to aerosolize transmission and gains back it’s original 30+% CFR the whole species is in danger. Brazil needs to be dealt with and soon. Demanding the world ignore what is happening for the mehconomy is asking for biblical levels of human suffering. This bug will not go away on its own it is designed to spread and kill not only humans but every warm blooded animal that has ACE2 cell receptors hint that’s nearly every animal on earth that walks, plus, smothers, or crawls the ACE2 is a basic lung function cell.
