There were 113 Irish in steeerage. Most didn’t survive.
The Titanic Museum in Cobh (formerly Queenstown) was fascinating.

They will float for a while, and perhaps they would have lasted long enough for the Carpathia and the California to arrive..............

A higher percentage of First Class men survived than Third Class children. For all the noble anecdotes, wealth was the largest determinant of who survived and who didn’t. Overall, 62% of First Class passengers, 43% of Second Class, and 25% of Third Class passengers survived.

My mother would often tell me the story her father told her. My maternal grandfather passed away long before I was born so I never got to hear it straight from him. He was called to the docks that fateful time to help control the crowd that had gathered because they had heard the captain of the ship had donned a dress to escape.

I think the Macy’s stayed in their cabin and went down with the ship; several others did the same. But yeah, I bet Hollyweird skewed some things.

Lol!! When it all come down to the wire, the will to survive often trumps everything else, including pride or dignity.

Dickerson Bishop dressed as a woman. His wife said so and divorced him 4 years later.
The captain went down with the ship.

"Sick passengers were not allowed to board."
My father, who was 8 in 1912, came to the U.S. from Holland with his two brothers and their parents. I never knew any of my grandparents, nor one of my uncles who died the year before I was born in 1947. My grandmother died of TB in 1919, and I've always wondered if she might have been infected on the trip over. They sailed on Holland-America's S.S. Rijndam (Ryndam). Holland-America has used the same name on at least two more recent ships.

Interesting...
On the Titanic, 1st and second class passengers went to pursers office then directly to their cabins. The 3rd class had to first be checked by team of doctors. They did not want sick people entering America.

I don’t think the wooden deckchairs worked much better than a waterlogged mattress. In the icy water, they froze to death in about 10 minutes and I don’t think a mattress or a deck chair would keep you out of the water enough to avoid freezing to death.

I highly recommend the book and movie about this tragedy.
Both are named “A Night to Remember.” The book, as you might imagine has a lot more detail. The movie was made in 1958.

You are RIGHT! My sister and I would do something similar as kids when swimming with an air mattress.
