An NHS clinical trial has found the £14 inhaler budesonide drug helped non-hospitalised over-50s recover from Covid-19 quicker
An NHS clinical trial has found the £14(USD$19.50) inhaler budesonide helped non-hospitalised over-50s cope with and recover from coronavirus.
Participants were also more likely to report a sustained recovery after 28 days - suggesting it cuts the risk of debilitating Long Covid.
It means the UK has discovered the world’s first cheap and readily available drug to work for patients to self-treat at home.
The findings come in the Government-funded PRINCIPLE clinical trial to quickly identify existing drugs against Covid-19.
Researchers said two puffs of the inhaler, twice a day, could now be used by anyone with symptoms.
NHS England said GPs should consider prescribing the drug immediately even before final clinical trial results are concluded.
National Medical Director Prof Stephen Powis said: “We are delighted to see these trial results for a medicine that could help people with COVID-19 recover more quickly at home instead of being admitted to hospital.
“While we await final trial results, GPs may wish to consider prescribing inhaled budesonide where there is a medical benefit to patients following a shared decision conversation.”
Chief Investigator Prof Richard Hobbs, of Oxford University, said: “For the first time we have high-quality evidence of an effective treatment that can be rolled out across the community for people who are at most risk of developing more severe illness from Covid-19.
“Unlike other proven treatments, budesonide is effective as a treatment at home and during the early stages of the illness.
“This is a significant milestone for this pandemic.”
Detailed analysis of 1,779 participants showed it cut recovery time by three days in patients at higher risk of more severe illness but who were treated in the community.

Works very well. I’ve used it occasionally as an asthma inhaler. Asthma kind of went away as I got very fit, but I still had the inhaler. Kept it handy for covid. Got the UK variant a few weeks ago, no breathing issues - but a slight cough after the fact resolved almost immediately upon taking budesonide.

That medication here in the US is about $300 if you have no insurance.
In India it’s about $9.50

I take a steroid inhaler once a day for allergy driven asthma plus D3 and zinc. I read you have a 30% less chance of catching covid is you use a daily inhaler.
I have eosinophilia asthma and in addition to Symbicort (budesonide) I also take oral steroids and Nucala (Mepolizumab). In addition I take quercetin,zinc, d3 and vitamin c.
I have HCQ, AZ, Ivermectin and doxycycline in my emergency kit if needed
I have not had any hints of a problem since this COVID scam started
