The family of a model who was left brain-damaged after having a serious allergic reaction to a peanut butter-infused pretzel was awarded nearly $30 million by a Las Vegas jury.
Chantel Giacalone’s family was awarded the $29.5 million sum Friday when a jury found that the responding ambulance service negligently treated her in 2013, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported.
“At least my daughter will be taken care of. I’m happy about that,” her father, Jack Giacalone, said after the verdict was read.

Chemicals are chemicals. The term artificial is not scientific.
This article has more information. She did not know there was PB in the pretzel and she did self administer her epi pen.
“Around 3 p.m., attorneys argued, Chantel Giacalone bit into the pretzel, not knowing it had peanut butter. She immediately called her dad, who told her to administer her EpiPen, ask Retes to get her Benadryl and seek medical care immediately. She did.
Based on phone calls, Morris said she could determine that the woman was in the paramedic room at 3:06 p.m., when she told Retes where to find her with Benadryl.
Retes testified that when she made her way to the medic tent, it was clear her friend couldn’t take the Benadryl. Her throat was closing, and she was black and blue. Her rings looked like they were about to pop off her swollen fingers”
Horrible what happened to her. She was a beautiful young woman. No amount of money can give her back what she lost.
The allergy is genetic, and it can be discovered with a DNA test.
Wow - pretty young lady. Prayers.
Event EMS is usually EMTs, not paramedics, and EMTs do not give IV epinephrine.
I know someone who has done event EMS, and the company she works for doesn’t even provide supplies and she can’t purchase IM epinephrine as an individual, or afford it if she could.
Now, harming that IS a crime.
“If I had that bad of an allergy, I would not eat anything I did not prepare myself.”
This is good advice.
The Louvre is closed. I don’t think seeing the Mona Lisa would do any good anyway.
Did you mean Lourdes?
My husband was diagnosed by the neurosurgeon with 5 brain tumors. I found out 2 days later that someone else had looked at the scans and said he had none - which turned out to be correct. Unfortunately by then it was too late to do anything about his brain bleed that would have made much difference.
I makes me sick to my stomach to even think about it. We deal with the effects every day.
Some guys just like chubbos....
Rubens might have understood.
I am puzzled by the peanut allergy situation. As you point out PB was everywhere when I was young and I can’t remember one kid having a problem Strawberries, certain seafoods and shell nuts yes, but PB no.
Politicians are slim
