Brazil has recorded more than 4,000 Covid-related deaths in 24 hours for the first time, as a more contagious variant fuels a surge in cases.
Hospitals are overcrowded, with people dying as they wait for treatment in some cities, and the health system is on the brink of collapse in many areas.
The country's total death toll is now almost 337,000, second only to the US.
But President Jair Bolsonaro continues to oppose any lockdown measures to curb the outbreak.
He argues that the damage to the economy would be worse than the effects of the virus itself, and has tried to reverse some of the restrictions imposed by local authorities in the courts.
Speaking to supporters outside the presidential residence on Tuesday, he criticised quarantine measures and suggested without evidence that they were linked to obesity and depression. He did not comment on the 4,195 deaths recorded in the previous 24 hours.
To date, Brazil has recorded more than 13 million cases of coronavirus, according to the health ministry. Some 66,570 people died with Covid-19 in March, more than double the previous monthly record.
"Brazil now... is a threat to the entire effort of the international community to control the pandemic," Dr Miguel Nicolelis, who has been closely tracking cases in the country, told the BBC.
"If Brazil is not under control, then the planet is not going to be safe, because we are brewing new variants every week... and they are going to cross borders," he said.

He’s a genocider.
I hate lockdowns. But Brazil should order a lockdown for 21 days. Time to send our vaccines from Operation Warp Speed to them. Our production is in full swing and we are nearing herd immunity here in the U.S.
how about we all blame Fauci and his “gain of function” research that he subbed out to China when he was told it was too dangerous.
Must be nice to be in denial.
Maybe he wants to see large numbers of brown skinned people wiped out and thinks that somehow, that plan won’t lead to large numbers of white skinned people getting killed too. Kind of like the whole HIV thing all over again.
According to that Brazil has had fewer deaths per 100k than the U.S. I guess his rhetoric hasn’t made things worse there.
I agree. If not out of a sense of compassion, then out of a sense of self preservation. If that devil isn’t restrained, it will make it’s way here and take a look at the border crisis developing. Everyone in south/central America will end up running for their lives north if that situation starts jumping borders and they will bring it with them. they already are.
This chart would look considerably different if it were updated from the March 17th situation that it reflects. For example, as of 6:00am on April 11th, the percent of the total American population that had received at least the first vaccine dose was 35.3% instead of the slightly over 20% reflected in the March 17th chart. Things are improving VERY rapidly in America on the vaccination front.
Oh yeah in the country of 500 million people all those deaths were caused by COVID-19 right?
Nice try communist dirtbags you’re a little scam is over
COVID-19 is a scam a communist scam
Doubt me?
At this point you have to be a moron
Fatality rate is a snapshot in time. There situation is just now beginning to spiral out of control. We’ll see where they are in July after their ICUs have been overwhelmed for a couple of months. I sincerely hope that it doesn’t come to that though.
Oops. It should be as of 6:00 am on April10th instead of April 11th.
Agree.
I suspect you’re right.
A quick look at the statistics indicates Brazils deaths per 100K population is actually below the USA’s. Their case fatality is just slightly higher, probably given slightly lower standards of medical care. They are definitely in a 2nd wave, merely behind the 2nd wave that occurred in USA and other places
Its a tough political decision, but they should do nothing, except trying to implement best practices in treating Covid cases and protecting the elderly. The trend will peak and decline soon.
Amen
It’s a communist weapon. Brazil has a population of 211 million people btw. Are you drunk? Cuz that’s probably a good idea.
Yeah, OK. And they've had Covid-19 for the same amount of time the U.S. has.
Case Fatality Rate and mortality rates are a snapshot in time. they reflect the here and now and the past but not what may come. For example, after 2 months of having their ICUs overwhelmed, their CFR and mortality rate will certainly surpass the United States. Doing nothing will not benefit them or us. Once that disaster starts jumping borders, it’s going to screw with us “six ways from Sunday”.
It’s a scam and they would love to oust conservative Bolsonaro. Consider the source of criticism.

You don’t get it, CFR changes from day to day based on the changing situation. If their ICUs are overwhelmed for 2 months, their CFR will definitely skyrocket. Think about it. We won’t know about final CFRs until this whole thing is over and it isn’t over.
