Florida Demands CDC to Reopen Cruises Immediately, Files Lawsuit

The pressure to get the CDC to allow cruise operations to resume in the United States has just reached another level. With the U.S. Centers for Disease Control & Prevention remaining firm on its Conditional Sailing Order, Florida Gov. DeSantis has announced that the state is filing a lawsuit against the CDC and the federal government demanding that cruising is allowed to resume.

Florida Sues CDC to Allow Cruises to Resume It’s obvious now that the cruise industry has had enough, including officials in Florida, cruise ports, cruise lines, and all the local businesses impacted by an industry that has been shut down for over a year.

In a press briefing that took place today at PortMiami, the cruise capital of the world, Florida Gov. DeSantis made a major announcement. A big factor of the announcement was the impact the cruise industry shutdown was having on employment and that it was far below the national average.

Gov. DeSantis said:

“The Federal Government and the CDC has locked down this industry for over a year. This is not reasonable, this is not rational, and guess what, if they say that cruising is not safe, even with widespread vaccine availability, all the testing you want, they have now have antibody treatments that have been effective, they have all these different things, it’s a much different situation than a year ago.”

“But guess what, people are still going to go on cruises, you know what they’re going to do? instead of flying to Miami, spending money to stay in our hotels, spending money to eat in our restaurants before they get on the ship, they’re going to fly to the Bahamas and they are going to get on the ships in the Bahamas, and they are going to spend the money in the Bahamas and then they are going to do the same thing that they would have done, it just won’t be helping the state of Florida and it won’t be helping our folks here who really depend on it.”

“So how does that make any sense? It doesn’t it’s rational and this is something that we don’t believe can continue any longer.”

With cruise lines such as Royal Caribbean shifting vessels to new homeports such as the Bahamas due to the industry shutdown in the U.S. Cruisers will still have to fly there. They’ll be spending money in the Bahamas which could have been spent in Florida.

Even Norwegian Cruise Line has now announced that it will be shifting to alternative homeports outside the U.S. Carnival Cruise Line which was recently called “America’s cruise line” by its President also hinted that it could be forced to move outside the U.S. if cruises don’t start this summer.

The cruise industry at the moment in the United States is in crisis and the state of Florida where some of the world’s largest ports are located has suffered heavily with no cruise operations. As a result, Gov. DeSantis said:

“Today, I’m happy to announce that on behalf of the tens of thousands of Floridians whose livelihoods depend on the viability of an open cruise industry, today, Florida is fighting back. We’re filing a lawsuit against the Federal government and the CDC demanding that our cruise ships be re-opened immediately.”

DeSantis believes the Federal Government does not have the right to mothball a major industry for over a year. He thinks there is a good chance for success.

The CDC recently released phase two of its four-phase framework on the Conditional Sailing Order on April 2. however, the further technical instructions still did not provide any set timeline. They produced even more complications to resume operations.

The announcement comes after a growing pressure towards the CDC to lift its Conditional Sailing Order by July 4, 2021. There has been a letter from the Miami-Dade Mayor, a letter from Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, calls from the Cruise Lines International Association and many more messages towards the CDC to let cruising resume.

With all these developments in the last week, all eyes will now be on the CDC to see what happens next. Cruise Hive will keep readers informed on any new developments.

Great news. The CDC won’t allow cruising unless they’re pushed.

How does the CDC have legal authority to shut down an industry, but hundreds of thousands our of work, and cost that industry hundreds of millions of dollars?

The CDC needs to be shuttered. Everyone fired. Decision makers thrown in prison for abusing American’s civil rights. When non-elected people have the ability to essentially make law and shutter businesses they become the enemies of freedom.

I have, yet another, dumb question: What authority does the CDC have over the cruise industry?

Amen. If they can become dictators due to any declaration of emergency, there will always be a declaration of emergency.

The ports are not run by the feds. They should open up operations and see how the feds respond.

The thing that could hurt them is if the feds refuse to process customs on the way back. Then again, if illegals can cross without customs, why can’t we??

CDC is using an obscure ancient law which allows them to take measures to stop spreading communicable diseases. But as the governor said, things are radically different now compared to March 2020. The vaccines are extremely popular and proven effective in creating anti-bodies to covid-19 including any varients, and people are lining up for them, and the treatment in hospitals is so much more effective now than last summer.

CDC is an institution full of big government bureaucrats who like nothing more than overuse their power. They seem to forget they work for us, not the other way around.

And with sleepy Joe at the helm, who has fed at the government trough for all his working life, he is doing the bidding of DNC to take out governor DeSantis who is very popular in Florida and likely to be a leading candidate running in 2024 against incumbent democrat president Kommiela.

I have, yet another, dumb question: What authority does the CDC have over the cruise industry?

Our legislators have allowed somre Govt. agencies to make rules nd reulaions that have the effect of laws.

For example; Govt. Fishery agencies tell us what fishwe can't have onboard , when we can fish, where we can fish, what amount of a fish species we can have on board, who needs to have what fishing licenses, etc.

If you violate those regulations you will be fined or possibly jailed, as has happened to hundreds of fishermen.

Multiply that by all the other Govt. agencies that are making regulations and you can see how easy it is to be in violation of some Govt. Agency law.-Tom

They have no authority over the cruise industry. Their authority relates to "preventing the introduction, transmission, and spread of communicable diseases in the United States". If you note the statistics here, on Royal Carribean ten covid cases for over 100,000 passengers on non US cruises I'd suggest the "spread" via cruise lines is no longer an issue. Far less than airlines.

Maybe the cruise ships just need to run up a black flag and ignore the CDC. CDC can’t stop them once they are in international waters!

There are nasty viruses worse than Corona on cruise ships all the time and people still choose these types of vacations. Let people take care of their own bodies and make their own choices. This is absurd. The pharmacy on board can stock all the treatments for Covid of which there are several. Life is risky every minute of everyday.
