My first car was a tangerine (orange) MG. Bought it brand new $2500. Fun to drive. Then a few years later I bought another one but they had changed from dual side draft carburetors to single. Nothing but trouble with the second one.
truly iconic but frustrating cars
I had a ‘62 MGA 1600 Mk II roadster. I quite agree!
those carbs were a major pain in the arse
Whats even crazier is brit bikes!
Not to mention the SU electric fuel pump. But, on an MGA at least, if you left the battery cover off, you could reach behind the seats and whack the fuel pump with a hammer to get it running again. You didn’t even have to get out of the car!
:)
THAT’S IT! Paint it BRG and it’s identical to my old car. Yep, roll up, windows, outside door handles, functional heater and all.
I can’t see the rear end very well but I think that may be a 1960 or later 1600. And it is a very nice one! Probably go for between $25K-$30K today There are a number of them for sale on various classic car Internet sales sites. One of the best is Gateway Classic Cars in Atlanta.
My problem is whether to spend the $$ on a 60+ year old car, or use the money during retirement. Decisions, decisions. Is that Yours?
Boy, you’re right about the smoke. Managed to fix the hood, er, bonnet issue and eventually got the oil consumption down but never out. Had to get rid of it, being a semi-broke college kid and all.
My 2nd car was a yellow 1977 MGB which I drove from Houston to Los Angeles with the top down. Should’ve kept my 1st car which was a 1964 Mustang.
No, I wish it was, but it’s not mine.

Had a blast running road rallies in CA, back in the day, in a 1968 MGC drop top.
Bought a B-GT some years later and enjoyed the hell out of it.
Thinking to pick up another one as a retirement project...but, prices are ugly.
MGs constantly leaked oil.
Fun car at the beach.
5.56mm
Nothing better than to brush the snow off the tonneau cover and go for a ride!
Back when America was still America (before Obama was born) some filthy used car salesman sold me a 1956 Morris Oxford. Had to stop one time but brake pedal went to floor. Pulled emergency brake which was a foot long shaft mounted vertically on floor. Came off in my hand. Opened door and dragged foot to stop car.
Junque.
My brother bought a brand new orange-red 1972 MGB GT in the fall of '71. A fun little car. He drove it daily for 10 or 12 years, then stored it in a friend's barn on a Virginia farm. Seven or eight years ago he recovered it, had it shipped home and made a project of it.
The engine has been rebuilt, the interior spiffed up and a new coat of paint applied. He drives it a few times a month, usually to the pub for the Irish session, and displays it in British car shows. He has not complained of any electrical glitches- yet.
My favorite was my '56 Triumph TR-3. I wish I'd stored that away instead of selling it!
