How to destroy the public school system
American Thinker ^ | 4 Apr, 2021 | Rob Jenkins

Unlike many conservative commentators, I've long been a supporter of public schools. I enjoyed many positive experiences with them growing up, and my four children received an excellent public education here in Gwinnett County, Georgia, for which I am grateful.

Plus I've always thought there's something uniquely egalitarian and therefore American about the idea of public education, providing opportunities for all children to better themselves. I know that some conservatives like to call them "government schools," and that is technically correct. But I've always preferred to think of them as community schools, passing on the values of the community. At least, that used to be the case, and I'm hopeful that, in many places, it still is.

However, if I were vehemently opposed to public schools, and what I really wanted was to destroy them, I know exactly how I'd go about it.

First, I'd help elect radical, neo-Marxist ideologues to the local school board. As a bonus, they wouldn't have much experience running a school system or kids of their own in the county schools.

Once my radical leftists held a majority on the board, they could begin enacting their extremist agenda — starting with keeping as many kids out of school as possible for as long as possible by pushing popular superstitions about COVID-19.

I know Ahrensfield. He married a girl in my class she was about 1/4 his size. I used to go out with his sister. I grew up with Charlie Langton, he chased a guy like 80? yds and tackled him on the 1 yd. line and we held, probably in one of the games you mentioned. He is still famous for it in our generation.

I am telling every parent or grandparent I know to look hrd at their circle of friends.

Find the ones who have skills-—carpenter-—welder—bookkeeper—accountant-—metal fabricator...plumber-—Heat & air installer-—window installer-—large animal vet-—saddle or boot maker-—mechanic(real mechanic=NOT a parts changer who reads a computer diagnosis)—collision repair shop-—book store-—fabric store-—

I once applied for an accounting job in a small company. The owner didn’t wish to pay me what I wanted. I told him: “Take me for a week, and see what I can do. IF you don’t think I am qualified to do your work, Let me go & you do NOT owe me a thing...but if you keep me, you owe me for the week, and I get another raise in 60 days....”

I got the job & a raise in 3 weeks, and another in another month.

The USA doesn’t just consist of college students & fast food workers.

MANY factories have tours for people to see how things in the USA are made. cars-—steel-—glass-—lots of things. Find a weekend or a ‘teachers conference day’ to use for such a tour.

Contact each one & ask them IF they would be willing to tutor any of your kids/grandkids in that skill. Maybe even go on weekends to watch how a carpenter does his job-—or a metal fabricator, etc.

Your kids are NOT learning anything useful in school.

Telling them to ‘go to college’ for another 4 years so they can pay the Feds for a student loan in compound interest is about the worst advice they can get.

I would think that most Conservatives have friends of similar thought. Trade off the knowledge you know with another ...Life skills are better than book skills in many instances.

I actually teach in the public schools in Florida. So many of my students from conservative families pegged me immediately as one of them. There is a small force of conservative leaning teachers, and I wish more would go into education. I would love to teach at a Christian school — but I do what I can.

It is the state which provides their paychecks so it is inevitable that Teachers will end up worshiping at the alter of the state. Separation of School and State is an idea whose time has come.

My folks grew up in the early 60s. Sometime back then, prayers in public school was discontinued by order of SCOTUS. One of their teachers announced that nevertheless they’d continue the morning routine that began with a psalm and the Lord’s Prayer. Teacher was a progressive by the standards of the day; a Vassar girl...or maybe it was Wellesley...one of the 7 sisters from the northeast. A former suffragette still itching for a little civil disobedience.
This was in NY. Liberals in the schools, but not entirely deranged at that point.
The stories they told me about the late 60s, well, that’s some scary stuff.

I was born in Florida and went to school there through the university level. I think the Florida public schools may not be as heavily infiltrated by radical leftists as other states....but I would like to hear your opinion on that.

I stayed in touch somewhat with my university through my leadership of corporate sponsored/funded engineering research partnerships. I think my university has gone full BML/transgender woke. It influences even students in the college of engineering although the engineering professors seemed embarrassed by it.

That is so cool. God bless the great memories, even if my team didn’t win. LOL. I can’t believe I remembered the name Ahrensfield! Not his first name though.

My school, great though it was, totally caved. They should have thumbed their noses at the wretched SCOTUS.

I taught about a quarter-century in NYC public schools. As soon as Bloomberg got mayoral control, the entire system went to heck, and this was highly accelerated under the "stewardship" of the idiot commie DumblASSio. Teachers will be written up for disciplining students, even students who never show up must be given a 55 as a grade, "guidance" counselors play games with assessing whether students have enough credits to graduate, counting many courses twice, students learn about black power, radicalism, etc. rather than American History. Every course that requires brainpower has been watered down to allow the lowest common denominator to pass. Some education, huh? Conservative teachers were harassed unmercifully until they quit, retired, or were brought up on bogus "charges" to terminate them. They didn't want people giving actually honest grades, no sir.

Soooo glad to be retired and far from that mess.

Man, that sounds like a nightmare. Currently I’m at a charter school down near Disney World. Largely hispanic population, dedicated but flakey staff. We have a hard time keeping teachers because there’s not enough direction.

Still, the kids are hilarious, very likeable and hungry to learn. I contrast that with the vapid rich kids over in Seminole Co.

I’ll be there as long as I’m needed.

The public school system was destroyed when Carter created the Department of Education.
