Throughout the 1990s and 2000s I worked in the music industry, doing marketing for record labels including Sony, Universal and Interscope Geffen A&M. My love for all things smooth, granted as a birthright to all born within the Santa Cruz county lines, never waned. I was often teased for being an aficionado of the soft-rock genre by colleagues at the office and bands I toured with. It was completely uncool to admit to being a fan of glossily produced songs in the era of indie rock, grunge and riot grrrls.

aka easy listening or middle of the road (MOR)
If they had a prog channel, I might even get satellite again.
Interesting. I’ll check. It was 70 at one time.
I’ve called this Fern Bar music, and have since I was about ten — and all because this sort of 70s mellow gold/easy listening stuff was what I thought would have been played in the Regal Beagle on Three’s COmpany.
Brings to mind that 70s swingin’ singles culture with lots of blow dried hair, leisure suits, pina coladas et al.
I was a punker/new waver in my teens (early - mid 80s) and now have a soft spot for this stuff because it transports me back to a more sane/comfortable time.
I miss this era. And actually have the Sirius/XM channel programmed in with my 1st Wave, Industrial/Nu Metal and techno stations.
He cowrote that song with Kenny Logins.
Doo Wop was a post-genre name as well. They were “vocal groups” until the record collectors went looking for them and listing them in the 60s.
Northern Soul as well (a British term for the 60s “not-Motown” soul records being played years later at all night uppers-fueled dance parties in Northern England.
The thing is, before Michael McDonald, the Doobie Brothers were associated with Bikers.
Fresca?
FERN BAR MUSIC
I don't think they are a complete overlap.
The Carpenters would be Easy Listening, but not Yacht Rock, right? What about the various Osmonds were Easy Listening, but not Yacht Rock. What about England Dan and John Ford Coley or James Taylors. Not Yacht Rock?
Was it bikers who put Rerun up to bootlegging that Doobie Brothers’ concert?

The Carpenters were excellent musicians, I wish they could have done other types of music. Karen was an amazing drummer.
They take it down when summer ends. I think it’d be a great year-round channel.
I agree.
Steely Dan’s lyrics are full of drug addicts and dealers, alcoholics, street gangs, Caribbean slum-life, homosexual prostitutes, teen delinquents, third-world loser expats, and all night DJ’s.
Not really what one would associate with a yacht.
Unless it were Hunter Biden’s.
The mere mention of those names makes me wish I'd been born deaf.
I just know England Dan is not English. He's the brother of Seals and Crofts.
A co-worker of mine a few years back who was a professional musician in his younger days said this about Steely Dan, “the most boring music in the world recorded to perfection.” I can respect the musicianship, but the music leaves me cold.
