If You Ever Hear This 4-Word Phrase When You Pick Up the Phone, Hang Up Immediately
Readers Digest ^ | Nov. 4, 2020 | Sam Benson Smith

Few people still pick up phone calls from unknown numbers, but if you do you need to listen closely to what the person on the other end says. If you receive a call and immediately hear the phrase “Can you hear me?,” hang up. The phrase is used to coax you into saying “yes,” a word that, if said in your voice, is as good as gold for con artists.

LOL! That’s one thing about Free Republic, and conservative sites in general. No matter what the topic is, there’s plenty of good humor.

I just always reply with, “who’s calling”?

Then if I’m in the mood for it I tell them I’m on death row waiting for a call from the governor.

I have used the Seinfeld ploy. “Sorry I don’t have time to talk right now, but if you give me your home number, I’ll call you back”. When they sputter and tell me I can’t call them at home, I’ll respond, “Well, you called ME at home!”, then hang up.

A good follow-up might be “Are you the governor? If not, please put the governor on. I want to speak to the governor.”

Then you could babble on about how you were framed by Hillary Clinton.

I’ve had 3 or 4 of these “Can you hear me?” calls in the past few years. I had read about the scam, though, so my reply was “I can hear you.” The caller then tries again with “So, you can hear me alright?” Me: “Loud and clear.” At that point the caller hangs up.

If I don't know the person I just always ask "who's calling?!" Answer their question with a question.

Only Geezers believe this and, only geezers pick up a phone and answer it at all without screening.

Don’t do that geezers!

I pretty much don’t answer my phone at all. I get 20 spams a day and anyone that knows me will text or email.

Yep, if you are diligent to check things.

Mine may be quarterly.

Even so, how many powered wheel chairs could be obtained and sold? Or how much opioids?

There are a couple of you tube channels that have people troll scammers. Sometimes they delete the scammers files, or encrypt their hard drives. They often pretend to be senile old people and keep the scammers talking about nonsense for hours. One of my favorite trolls is when they pretend to call themselves as another group of scammers where the real scammer can see the other “scammer” being successful bilking the “old people” out of their money. At this point the original scammer usually starts screaming and cursing. When a scammer sees 30,000 bucks float away to another scammer they practically stroke out. Good fun
