NATIONAL AFFAIRS: THE QUESTION OF FORT SUMPTER; UPS AND DOWNS OF THE STATES; OUR ARMY AND NAVY: Analysis of the Army and Navy Registers (3/28/1861)

WASHINGTON, Wednesday, March 27.

EVACUATION OF FORT SUMPTER.

Col. LAMON, who has been on a visit to Fort Sumpter, has returned to this city, and the exact condition of affairs at the Fort is now known to the Government. A dispatch from Charleston says that the impression prevails there that the immediate evacuation has been fully decided upon, and that Col. LAMON will return there with the order.

DISPATCHES ABOUT FORT SUMPTER.

The "Washington" dispatches relative to Fort Sumpter, published daily by the harlequin Herald, are entire fabrications, -- the product of random guesses, and unbridled romance. They are the laughing stock of the Executive Departments, and not worthy of imitation by any newspaper aiming at the slightest character for accuracy in its facts. The result of the Fort Sumpter matter will prove that nobody outside the Administration itself and its officers had any knowledge of what the Government is doing.

WISCONSIN ON SUMPTER.

The Governor of Wisconsin has written to a friend in this city that the evacuation of Fort Sumpter, at this time, will tend to disrupt the Republican Party in that State, and divide the entire Northwest. He says the people of that section are, almost without distinction of party, opposed to the policy of abandonment, and, rather than see it adopted, would prefer to sink every man-of-war in the Navy. The Governor's letter is very decided in tone, and only one of many received here recently of the same character.

THE POLICY AT FORT PICKENS.

I neither see nor hear anything tending to modify the opinion heretofore expressed, that it is not the policy of the Administration to abandon Fort Pickens.

Who knew they had CNN back then?

It is FORT SUMTER, no P, regardless of how the press has handled it for the last century and a half.

Probably not. If NYT changes something then It is unalterably changed in NYT’s mind.

I wish I could time travel back to the opening shot at Ft Sumpter with a few hundred .223 Bushmasters. The Lincolnites would have quickly reconsidered their love for central government.

Exactly what would you have done with a few hundred .223 Bushmasters at Fort Sumter?
