Beverly Cleary, the beloved children’s books author famous for “Henry Huggins,” “Ribsy” and “Ramona Quimby,” has died. She was 104.
HarperCollins, her longtime publisher, announced her death Friday. Cleary, whose books have sold more than 85 million copies and have been translated into 29 different languages, died Thursday in her longtime home of Carmel, California.
“We are saddened by the passing of Beverly Cleary, one of the most beloved children’s authors of all time,” the publisher said in a statement. “Looking back, she’d often say, ‘I’ve had a lucky life,’ and generations of children count themselves lucky too — lucky to have the very real characters Beverly Cleary created, including Henry Huggins, Ramona and Beezus Quimby, and Ralph S. Mouse, as true friends who helped shape their growing-up years. We at HarperCollins also feel extremely lucky to have worked with Beverly Cleary and to have enjoyed her sparkling wit. Her timeless books are an affirmation of her everlasting connection to the pleasures, challenges, and triumphs that are part of every childhood.”

Condolences to family and friends of Beverly Cleary.
Growing up on Lawn Guyland, you could always tell a parent’s politics by whether their kids read Beverly Cleary vs those who had their kids read Judy Blume.

Never read or had interest in Judy Blume.
RIP.
HA! RIP Beverly Cleary.
My daughter said she read her books over and over as a kid.
She used to manage the children’s department at a Barnes and Noble. She set up a special display to celebrate Cleary’s 100th birthday.
Even though sh no longer works there it’s become an annual store tradition.
I read Cleary and Blume. Enjoyed both.
For me, politics had nothing to do with it.
I loved both as well ... a good book is a good book - especially if it gets little ones reading (and not staring at a screen that reads for you).
I had no idea that Beverly Cleary was still alive — we have recently lost her and Norton Juster (Phantom Toolbooth). Will there there a third?
The owner of my hometown Funeral Home always said that death comes in threes.
I’ve noticed that ,most of the time, it does work that way.
Strange.
She was really great. I just the other day opened up and leafed through my autographed copy of The Mouse and the Motorcycle.
She was great. Even Democrats could find nothing to cancel when it came to her childrens’ books.
What a national treasure. I thrived on her books and read Ramona aloud to every one of my kindergartners.
I adored Ramona and cried right along with her. I’m 78 and learned the lessons needed to be true to myself and survive the world, but I was desolate when I had read all the Ramona books and there were no more new ones.
And I had a wonderful teacher for both 1st & 2nd grade whom I loved as much as Ramona loved hers.
I hope your students loved you back just as much.
Obviously, Beverly Cleary kids were the “non-ethnic” Republicans and Blume kids were from Jewish & Catholic Democrat clans. Blume wrote some pretty racy stuff, for kids and adults. I read both. My parents were immigrants, apolitical, and didn’t have a clue what I was reading: Stephen King at 10, Jackie Collins at 12.
Blume wrote for little kids, teens, and adults. Her adult stuff like Wifey, was rather raunchy, lots of sex, adultery, etc. Not high literature.
As I was a home schooler I trust they did!! :)
It is funny I’d read aloud to the youngest and the older a would all still gather around. I soon learned and we read aloud through high school no apologies. Lots of book including much Dickens, the great brain, all
The Laura Ingalls and LOTR and little britches...fourteen year old boys will stop and listen to stories read aloud - one of the best decisions I made home schooling.
Like your situation I was left alone as to read materials and was reading such trash as the happy hooker and valley of the dolls while
Pre teen. I love my mother but she was way too Laissez faire. I did not repeat those errors.
