Growing up on Lawn Guyland, you could always tell a parent’s politics by whether their kids read Beverly Cleary vs those who had their kids read Judy Blume.
Never read or had interest in Judy Blume.
HA! RIP Beverly Cleary.
My daughter said she read her books over and over as a kid.
She used to manage the children’s department at a Barnes and Noble. She set up a special display to celebrate Cleary’s 100th birthday.
Even though sh no longer works there it’s become an annual store tradition.
I read Cleary and Blume. Enjoyed both.
For me, politics had nothing to do with it.
Obviously, Beverly Cleary kids were the “non-ethnic” Republicans and Blume kids were from Jewish & Catholic Democrat clans. Blume wrote some pretty racy stuff, for kids and adults. I read both. My parents were immigrants, apolitical, and didn’t have a clue what I was reading: Stephen King at 10, Jackie Collins at 12.
