Its not just staying alert.

Its situational awareness, let it radiate out around you.

This allows one to be relaxed, completely aware, and ready to act.

Just alert imp;lies being all cranked up, Nit a good way. You burn out.

But cool awareness is good, Keep your weapons close, well maintained. If you are lucky , you will never have to use them.

"It is important to know what is going on outside and around that home."

Great article.

Since I've been working from home (Covid), I take a mile walk around the block in the morning and in the afternoon - a great opportunity to reconnoiter the outer perimeter of my home.

I know what (and who) belongs here and what doesn't.

Condition yellow is good advice when outside the home...I have always taught my wife to be aware of her surroundings AT ALL TIMES. Now important than ever with all these oxygen-deprived ‘Branch Covidians’ out there.

Good article.

Highly recommend Gavin DeBecker’s “Gift of Fear” .... situational awareness & don’t excuse, rationalize away when your ‘gut’, that little ‘spidey sense’ is telling you something is wrong, even before your brain can completely figure it out. Women in particular do this - don’t want to be rude or make a scene & the bad guys take advantage. One example - anyone who does not respect “NO” is a problem .... “let me help you put those groceries in your car” ... NO (not ‘I think I can handle it myself - that is not a hard NO) ... “oh come on, just let me help you - looks like you need some help” .... etc. Good guys respect “no”, bad guys try to overcome it.

My nieces all got the book before they went to college.

one word

REACT.

React comes after an ACTion.

If you're not alert to react, you won't.

I completely disagree with what some may think is fun by unexpectedly scaring another.

But friendly impromptu surprising moments are helpful in developing brain muscle memory.

It's kind'a like learning too spell an have good grammar .

You instinctively know if something's wrong or not.

LEARNING takes you beyond the "knowing" stage into the reaction stage ... in this case, immediate correction .. to and and

There’s a difference between using good judgment and being judgmental.

Judgment is not a dirty word.

I'm a grandmother and practice situational awareness at all times. I taught my children to do the same. When we all go out, say to dinner, we quiz each other afterwards on what we observed. Pretty good article here: How to develop the situational awareness of Jason Borne

I was always the smallest kid in class. Small town where it was fairly common for city folks to move to because their kids were getting into too much trouble in the city. So there were some bullying types and downright criminal mind types so I learned situational awareness at an early age.

I was born in Brooklyn. You learn situational awareness at an early age, especially if you take the subway.

I live at the end of a 12 house culdesac. My office windows allow me to see the entire street and driveways. While we are not a block party neighborhood I am aware of daytime traffic though not as much as before I retired.

” In the gunfight that followed, there was only one fatality—the daughter under the car was killed by a ricochet. It is possible that, while the officer clearly spotted trouble, he did not give sufficient thought to what his best response could have been.”

What else could have the police officer have done?
