Top 10 Reasons You Should Own An AR-15
The Federalist ^ | 12/12/2018 | Mark Overstreet

Posted on 03/24/2021 12:06:50 PM PDT by Kid Shelleen

In a recent item for The Federalist, David Harsanyi considered the M16 rifle one of the five most innovative firearms in American firearm development history. Yet something equally significant can be said about the semi-automatic AR-15 derived from the M16. Second to the muskets used in our revolutionary and civil wars, the AR-15 may be the most important firearm in American political history.

All told, more Americans have fired more rounds from more AR-15s for personal defense, defensive firearm training, marksmanship competitions, individual practice, and hunting than from any other rifle. For that reason, the AR-15 is the primary firearm upon which Americans would rely if they had to fight for freedom today.

Here are 10 reasons to own at least one AR-15 and to become skilled in its use

Many brands are good as far as I know. Some of the lowest priced ones work as well as anything else.

That's a huge caliber, man. You must be a real gun nut. ;)

when the M1A1 was routinely outgunned by the AK-47 armed NVA.

Where did you come up with that retarded remark?

12. Cops have them

13. Military has them

The 2 forces most (historically) mis-used by a gov’t against the citizenry.

Does anyone have an opinion on getting a 9mm caliber carbine, like the Sig MPX? I know you won’t get the power of a AR, but do you really need it? I see benefits in having one type of ammo across pistols and rifles.

The M1A1 was the folding stock paratrooper version of the M1 carbine. I’m sure some were given to ARVN forces, but they weren’t generally issued to US troops in VN. Maybe you were thinking of the M14?

OK. Not all troops carrying the M-14 were issued the happy switch, though all of the rifles were full-auto capable, according to my readings.

If they can get a ban on semi-auto rifles, and make it stick, rest assured they will be back for their original target from 1962-1985, HANDGUNS.

Anyone who lived in the 1960s and 1970s realize this is what I am talking about.

The lies we have been told over the years...
1962 We ONLY want to register handguns. Rifles will not be affected!
1964, We ONLY want to register ALL firearms, not ban them.
1968 We ONLY want to register all guns, and ban the import of foreign Saturday Night Specials, and 5-shot bolt action army surplus rifles! (they got the ban).
1970, We ONLY want to ban small American handguns. Rifles will not be affected!
1976 We ONLY want to ban ALL handguns! Rifles will not be affected!
1981, Actress Lee Grant on GMA screams...”THE NRA IS A RIFLE ORGANIZATION! THEY SHOULD GIVE UP THEIR HANDGUNS AND THEY CAN KEEP THEIR RIFLES!”
1984, they made a grab for the rifles, and missed, but played their hand.
1988,Josh Sugarmann, of the National Council to Ban Handguns tells how to ban rifles.

“Assault weapons’ menacing looks, coupled with the public’s confusion over
fully-automatic machine guns versus semi-automatic assault weapons
—anything that looks like a machine gun is assumed to be a machine
gun— can only increase the chance of public support for restrictions on
these weapons.”
– Josh Sugarmann
Gun owners now know that any time we negotiate with those who want to ban guns, we are up against a stacked deck.

1. You couldn't get your hands on an AR-10, FN-FAL, or M-14 / M1A

2. You could get your hands on an AR-10, FN-FAL, or M-14 / M1A but the .308 / 7.62 is a bit much for you to handle.

3. You could get your hands on an AR-10, FN-FAL, or M-14 / M1A but expect to be shooting with one hand. Just a reminder to keep your hands at 10 and 2 on the steering wheel when possible.

4. You expect your enemies to carry .223 / 5.56 and you might need to collect their ammo. It's a sad day in America when your enemy is more likely to be wielding an AR-15 or M-4 and not an AK-47.

I went through boot camp at MCRD San Diego in ‘69. We were issued M14 rifles, but the full auto selector was blocked. I have had the opportunity to fire a full auto M14 at the Albany machine gun shoot in Oregon before it was shut down, and it’s easy to see why the military gave up on the idea of using the M14 as a squad auto. I have also fired a full auto FAL at the same shoot, and while it was also difficult to control it was superior to the M14.

I have a MPX pistol that I did a Form 1 SBR and it is definitely one of my favorite guns. The only disadvantage compared to other 9mm carbines is that unlike most that use Glock mags it has a proprietary magazine made by Lancer. They are excellent mags but stupid expensive.
