The Philippines is in talks with the Serum Institute of India (SII) to study the possibility of local vaccine production, vaccine czar Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr. said Wednesday.
Galvez, who recently returned from India where he signed a deal for 30 million Novavax doses, said the Philippines can take its cue from its Asian neighbor on how to produce vaccines locally.
"We spoke with SII to study the possibility of bringing back the country’s capability to produce its own vaccines." he said during Kapihan sa Manila Bay.
"The SII has 136 scientists and they want to help us produce our own vaccines."
The SII is considered the world’s largest vaccine manufacturer. It is also the main supplier of British-Swedish drugmaker AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 jab.
Galvez expressed optimism that the Philippines can bring back the vaccine production capability that it had in 1938 to ensure a steady and stable supply of vaccines amid the pandemic.
He added that the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine presented a three-year program for the expansion of its vaccine research and development.
"It was really good. It will require an economy of scale investment. This is really for us to have a definitive source of vaccines" he said.

It's hard to tell how big of a deal this is for Novavax because they didn't give any prices, and most of it, it sounds like it will be produced by Novavax's partner Serum Institute of India, so presumably, that might be a lower-cost it being made in India.
Now that the Philippines is in talks with the Serum Institute of India (SII) to mass produce Novavax's vaccine, that could lower the cost further.

There is a US company, traded on the nasdaq, that has the US license for Covaxin which is made by an Indian pharmaceutical. I have my doubts that it will get approved here, and if it does it will be too late to take much market share. But the stock price did moonshot on the news. I guess they are exporting the vaccine, production and sales to as many countries as possible.
Interesting aspect is that in India they approved this Covaxin for children.
we will do it Carlito’s Way
Ive been to the P.I. and there aint no friggen way you’re injecting me with anything that comes from there.
