A "secret" medieval tunnel system has been discovered by electrical technicians in south Wales.
A team working for Western Power Distribution made the discovery while moving an electrical pole near Tintern, in the Wye Valley, Monmouthshire.
Western Power said the tunnels, near to 12th Century Tintern Abbey, were not shown on any Ordnance Survey map.
After consultation with Cadw, the energy firm has stopped all work to allow archaeological investigation. "Shortly after the excavation work began, the digging team made the extraordinary discovery of what they initially thought to be a cave."
Mr Gore said "work stopped immediately", adding: "I have been involved in other excavations where we have discovered old wells and cellars not shown on any plans, but nothing as exciting and impressive as this."
The 4ft (122cm) high tunnel was "tucked away" underneath a footpath running parallel to the Angiddy Brook, and appears to follow the brook's route along the valley.
An expert from Cadw, the Welsh Government's historic and cultural heritage service, was said to be "very impressed" and "quite fascinated" by the discovery, Mr Gore added.
Western Power said the network of tunnels did not appear on any maps dating back as far as the 18th Century, and no local residents or authorities had any knowledge of it.
Mr Gore said it "could take years" before investigations were concluded.

Terrific! Now the taxpayers don’t need to cover the cost of any further digging.
Since they weren’t paying for it anyway?
It looks pretty big to be so medieval.
Well constructed. They don’t make ‘em like they used to.
Becky! We’re saved!
At this point, what difference does it make, Tom? Where the hell are we anyway?
I got a feeling we ain’t in Missouri no more. Wonder if Aint Polly and Huck are still alive. I feel like I might be 190 years old.
Injun Joe sure was mighty tasty, way back then.
This would be a good one for ‘Time Team’ - miss that show

people were a lot smaller in those days of youre.
As my college history professor would say, “Vikings!” Church properties were favorite places to attack, since they conveniently sequestered a lot of the local gold and silver there.
I bet it's full of pedophiles and mole children and torture devices!
If they built these today then they would not last 100 years.
That’s some nice workmanship, particularly overhead, I can’t help but wonder if it’s way older than the Middle Ages.
A guy contacted me years ago about looking for an old castle tunnel in France(?) iirc. The family heirloom shotgun had been passed down to him. He was taking it apart to have the stock redone and found inside the long tube inside the stock a rolled up treasure map!
It was some relative that lived in an old castle and had fled with the Germans came in. They escaped right before they came and had stashed guns, money, gold, etc. in the hidden tunnel.
I forget why the relative never made it back to the castle or why it didn’t stay in the family. It is now part of a national state property. I know he was trying to work with lawyers to let him on to the property to explore - but didn’t want to divulge why. He kept on getting refused.

Been binge watching it. It’s amazing what they can turn up in only 3 days.
Interesting, if a little sketchy. :^) He needs to scan that map and lock up the original, with a cover letter describing the whole process. He may have to get some help with this search, maybe from the French gubmint.
I’m binge watching it as well
I’ve gotten a few calls when it comes to treasure hunters. Most of them will just offer you a cut of the treasure. This guy said he would pay for all of my expenses up front.
I don’t think he was scamming me - and I forget the details of the story but it sounded reasonable that the treasure might still be there.
And he knew which castle it was, and the map lined up with existing features. So it limited the search area. Not like trying to find Pancho Villa’s stash of gold and weapons that was buried in some valley that is 20 miles long.

The European version of a snow day, or year.
