Surgeons don’t wear them to protect themselves. Wearing a mask all day is a bacteria trap that can cause things like pneumonia.

Your mouth has acids to neutralize most things.
Your nose has ‘filtration’ which will block most air particles.
But your eyes have nothing. The thinnest membrane and little to no protection.
This is how people normally get the flu.

Best way to avoid contracting the virus would be to avoid touching your face when you’re out and to wash your hands regularly.
I read numerous falsehoods in Dr. Jim Meehan’s commentary. I will only do one: “Masks only cover the mouth and nose. They do not protect the eyes.” The purpose of the mask is to protect others by blocking the droplets you emit. In that case, you do not need to protect your eyes because they don’t emit the virus. My deception meter was pegging.

How does an eye doctor know anything about the electrostatic filtration properties of a mask?
Because surgeons will be leaning over open incisions for a sustained period of time? Really - this has nothing to do with Covid. It’s really pointing to trying to keep open wounds clean while operating.
The good doctor wasted a lot of words and demonstrates the group think that can occur in every profession. CDC Director Dr. Redfield explained what masks do, which is not to stop all virus particles, but to reduce the number of them, thus allowing people to build immunity by reducing viral load. Reduced viral load also reduces severity of disease and the death rate.
In general, I wonder if those who bow at the CDC altar regarding masks equally follow its guidance on alcohol, weight, diet, exercise, smoking, and marijuana.... I’m not against the CDC because they do have reasoned, science based information— except on the mask issue (which was science based before they flip flopped in a fright of “the sky is falling”).
Just because studies (many available on pubmed) start with the premise that “masks have been proven...” doesn’t mean that research has been done to affirm the pro-mask position, it simply means there is publishing bias with a boatload of shoddy, nonsense studies building resumes for hack scientists.

Well, I’ve seen them taking their masks off in the operating area after a procedure is complete. They certainly didn’t wear masks when making rounds as I observed as a hospital volunteer. We are in the midst of a storm of insanity in this country.
People in states governed by Democrats should continue to avoid wearing masks, getting vaccinated, washing their hands and eating cooked meat.
Surgeons wear masks in the operating room to Prevent infections to the patient whose guts would be opened to Human droplet contamination.
Also to protect the surgeon from getting the patients blood in his mouth and nose.
They also wear goggle to protect them eyes from flying blood droplets.
I see surgeons all the time walking around with face shields, masks, scrubs, and gloves, and driving their cars that way too. I see them walking around with their hands extended to prevent from touching things. Oh, that’s right, they only do that in surgery, not even walking the halls of a hospital.

Good info to reinforce what I already knew but the Karen’s and government overlords will refuse to listen, because they of course have feelings and know better than an actual scientist.
I’ve had the same well used and unwashed mask in my pocket for at least six months.
However, it’s on the way to being replaced. My wife saw one online that a fine mesh. Completely and totally useless but it keeps the Karen’s happy.
