Surgeons wear masks in the operating room to Prevent infections to the patient whose guts would be opened to Human droplet contamination.

Also to protect the surgeon from getting the patients blood in his mouth and nose.

They also wear goggle to protect them eyes from flying blood droplets.

The infections that are being prevented in a surgery are BACTERIAL infections. Common everyday to not so common BACTERIA.

If a surgeon was viremic and able to spread something, likely the fever involved would prevent the surgeon from even gowning up.

Bacteria are big compared to virus particles
