WASHINGTON, Thursday, March 14.

FORT SUMPTER.

The Cabinet held a Special Session this morning. It was understood to be relative to Fort Sumpter. Army officers expect the Sumpter garrison here next week.

THE COMMISSIONERS FROM THE SOUTH.

Mr. FORSYTH, of the Southern Commission, is recovering from his illness. Messrs. CRAWFORD and FORSYTH have communicated with the President through Mr. SEWARD, seeking to obtain an audience. They have been informed that Mr. LINCOLN and his Cabinet were not now prepared to receive them. When he will do so is not known. Mr. CRAWFORD says he is willing to wait until the questions now before the Cabinet are settled before making any formal demands.

A very general feeling has prevailed since the news that the women and children were leaving Pensacola, that JEFF. DAVIS intends to make an attack upon Fort Pickens, and thus precipitate civil war. Messrs. CRAWFORD and FORSYTH say that he will do no such thing until they have reported the result of their mission here.

DECISION OF THE FAMOUS GAINES CASE.

The Supreme Court was to-day the scene of unusual excitement. It had become known that the famous case of Mrs. GAINES vs. several residents of New-Orleans, Baltimore and Philadelphia, involving a vast amount, would be decided. A large number of her friends were present. The decision was given in her favor by a full Bench, and cannot be appealed, reversed, or excepted to. Only two Judges were adverse -- Chief Justice TANEY and Judge CATRON. Judge CAMPBELL gave no opinion, but he is known to have been favorable to the decision of the majority. It insures her title to many millions of dollars, a large portion of which is interest and rents on the original estates.

It’s Fort Sumter not Fort Sumpter.
If you’re going to spew history, please get the nemaes right.

"Well-Intentioned but Feeble – 7"

Here the Times mocks its cross-town rival, Horace Greeley's New York Tribune, for imagining a Confederate army of 50,000 supported by huge fleets of privateers, the Southern army marching on Washington, DC, and installing Jefferson Davis in the White House.

At a time when the Union army totaled around 16,000 mostly scattered in small forts out west, a Confederate army of 50,000 seemed fanciful.
But in fact, the Confederate congress has just authorized (March 6) 100,000 Confederate troops and Jefferson Davis will soon be authorizing & ordering privateer ships.

Almost all contemporary accounts use "Sumpter" -- I don't know when it changed in common parlance, but not Homer's fault.

Also, real history can hardly be called "spewing" and contemporary accounts like these are wonderfully revealing of how things looked at the time -- like the accounts that are certain that Abe would evacuate the fort -- or that refer to the platoons of office seekers besieging the White House!
