Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar of Minnesota has reintroduced a bill to cancel rent and mortgage payments due to the coronavirus pandemic. The bill would “institute a nationwide cancellation of rents and home mortgage payments through the duration of the coronavirus pandemic.”

If enacted, that would amount to a “taking” under the Constitution and would require the government to compensate landlords and banks for the cancelation.
Can it be retroactive so we can get a fat refund?

I hope you're right and I think you're right but I recall that rent control was held to be constitutional and rent control is only a slow motion attempt to transfer ownership, or at least elements of ownership, from owner of the property to tenant.
This proposal is but an aggressive version with the same objective.

The idea that you can enter into a contract with someone and then, after the fact, The government can just swoop in and say that the other party doesn’t have to honor it, but you do, is beyond stupid. It’s nonsense. It’s downright soviet.

I make too much to get a stimulus check, and since I am paying for everyone else’s stimulus, I am going to support having my mortgage paid off and I get the property that I have been making payments on faithfully for so long.
I figure if the government is going to crank up the free money printing press they might as well print some for me.
The nation’s children have been mortgaged off already. Might as well see a benefit for me instead of having to pay for all of it for everyone else.
