Washington: A new study suggests that the Pfizer-BioNtech Covid-19 vaccine can protect people against the concerning coronavirus variant first identified in Brazil. According to a report by CNN, blood serum samples from people who had received two doses of the Pfizer-BioNtech vaccine "efficiently" neutralized a version of the virus engineered to carry the same mutations as the variant, known as the P.1.
For the study, published by the New England Journal of Medicine on Monday, researchers at Pfizer, BioNTech and the University of Texas Medical Branch genetically engineered the virus to create versions carrying mutations found in a range of coronavirus variants, including P.1.
They tested them against blood samples taken from 15 people two or 4 weeks after they had received a second dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine as part of a clinical trial. The team found that the blood samples were able to neutralize the Brazil variant "roughly" as well as it could neutralize an earlier strain of the virus from January 2020.
CNN reported that the P.1 variant is suspected of fueling a resurgence of coronavirus cases in Brazil. It was found in 42 per cent of samples in one survey carried out in Manaus and cases have since emerged in countries including the US, the UK and Japan.
The P.1 variant has mutations in common with the variant first identified in South Africa that are thought to make it "more contagious" and possibly able to evade immunity from vaccines -- though this new study suggests the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine may still be effective.
Is that the one that gives your offspring a cone head?
*Zika for those of you in Rio Linda.
Very good news on the Pfizer vaccine’s effectiveness against the Brazilian variant (considered the worst of the big three).
Since that variant and the South African are so similar, it is not that surprising, because the Pfizer vaccine was already shown to be roughly as effective against the South African variant (although several percentage points less effective than against the most widespread COVID-19 virus, it was still effective enough to have gained authorization at that level).
Pfizer was also extensively tested in Israel’s vaccination program, while the third variant of significance (the UK, or Kent variant) was widespread there. It seems to be highly effective against that variant, by far the most common of the three variants of concern.
PaulR.: That P.1 Variant is a dominant theory for why Brazil has experienced a particularly hard time lately (you asked the other day).
Rampant HIV in Brazil is another reason why the Chinus is severe there.

Doesn’t help that the president there urged everyone to ignore the virus and go about life as usual because it’s basically just the flu. They’re just hitting their second wave and it’s looking increasingly worse every day.
Yeah, turns out there’s a happy medium between shutting down your entire economy and making zero changes to behavior to combat transmission. Israel looking better and better every day.
There it is: the official end of the “COVID Crisis”.
Noted - thanks for the info.
I did some reading — there are 17 unique mutations in the P1 variant.
(Anyone with solidly sourced info.): What is the thinking now about the stability of the COVID-19 virus vs. typical flus? My guess would be that COVID-19 is “more stable”, but not by a lot.
I am still mortified by the ineptitude of the CDC and the lack of usefully educational spots on TV. For example of the latter: I have yet to see a PSA on proper mask selection, or usage and handling.
I saw an article in Nature, from 8 Sep 2020 that said that COVID-19 changed about 1/2 as fast as influenza, and 1/4 the speed of HIV - about two single letter mutations per month.
This isn't about a virus, it's about control over every man woman and child on the planet and pushing dangerous masking, psychological torture and experimental injections on the globe.
Is the Brazillian variant the one that makes your butt stick out?
No ! The Brazillian involves hair removal using the 'hot wax' method
administered by a lovely young lady, named 'Svetlanya', wearing a leather halter and fishnet stockings while licking a bullwhip.
The method continues until you say: "Please ma'm, can I have another ?" Believe me, when Svetlanya is through with you, you want no protuberances or any bodily part sticking out, much less your butt.
