I had a meteor fly over my truck while driving to work about 20 years ago - it was dark and the object was below the cloud cover with burning chunks breaking off.
I called the local radio station from my office and nobody else saw it, apparently.

This thing fell how many miles and didn’t even make a dent in the Earth?
If it was that soft, it would have disintegrated before it hit the Earth.
If it was hard enough to make it through the atmosphere, it would have at least left a mark on the Earth.
In other words, I don’t think it was a meteorite.
