Is Prince Harry’s son Archie eligible to be US president? (Shameless vanity)

Had an interesting discussion on a group chat with my family last night. My youngest daughter who is liberal and believes the mainstream media (she’ll come around eventually) was up in arms about the mean treatment of little Archie by the royal family. Skin color, lack of title, no security etc. I did a little research on his lack of title and I found out about the George V convention. Long story short there’s a internet chat, discussion about Archie becoming President one while his cousin will be king at the same time.

No. His father was not a US citizen when he was born. He is not a NBC just as Obama and Cruz are not NBC.

[humor] he’s a BBC [/humor].

His father is not an American citizen, a requirement.

I guess he’s just as eligible as Winston Churchill would have been.

Which means, not.

That’s what I thought but I think the door was kicked open when Congress ok’ed McCain when he ran in 2008.

Put your mask back on! LOL! No more flyin’ for me. No need thankfully. Anyway, I guess the ‘royals’ need to weigh in based on the tint involved. :-)

Sure, anyone is eligible, as Obama proved and as our current VP will soon re-affirm.

Disagree? Who’s going to stop her, the Supreme Court?

I don’t have a title or professional security either. Where’s my victim card?

I have the official source here, and it says he’s eligible, but would have to do a few things.

“Because Archie was born to a U.S. citizen, he is considered a “natural born citizen” and could run for the country’s highest office — but he’d need to jump through some hoops. Archie would have to go through a naturalization proceeding and need special permission from Congress.” PEOPLE Magazine, February 2021

Since we’re wildly speculating...Archie is seventh in line to the British throne. So how about this? It’s possible that some day he could be the President of the United States AND the King of England.

Oops! I think I just broke a royal edict.

***His father is not an American citizen, a requirement***

If born in the US, it was my understanding that only one parent (mother or father) needed to be a US citizen; for the offspring to be a US citizen.

If born in Britain, the same rules apply.

LOL that’s how the discussion started. Unfortunately my adult kids sometimes rely on news from those types of sources.

McCain was born on a US military installation overseas while his father was serving on active duty there.

Under current interpretation of US law, if he is born on US soil, he is a natural born citizen. If he is born on non-US soil to at least 1 US citizen at the time of his birth, he is a natural born citizen.

Background -
The Constitution specificly enumerates Congress with the power to set the rules of naturalization. That includes who requires naturalization as well as those that do not.

The current code (will) of Congress is expressed in USC title 8 section 1401 (https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/8/1401)

Others on this forum express other opinions. I try to avoid opinion and point to specific law.

If one is born of either a US citizen mother *or* father the person is automatically a US...regardless of where he/she was born. But IIRC being considered a *natural born* citizen has added requirements.

The problem is there’s gray areas that have not and probably will not be addressed with the NBC rules
