Former Supreme Court Chief Justice Roger B. Taney’s name has been removed from a historic warship in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor by the Living Classrooms Foundation.
The foundation’s removal of Taney’s name from the ship serves as the latest in a series of gestures meant to acknowledge past wrongs and signal solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement in the wake of George Floyd’s death at the hands of Minneapolis police.
James Piper Bond, LCF president and CEO, said in a statement Wednesday that the organization was inspired to make the change, calling the court ruling “an abomination” and “great injustice” toward Black Americans.
“The national historic landmark we are charged with stewarding should be reflective of our values of equality and opportunity for all,” Bond said. “We are not erasing history. Nor is it our intention to minimize the service and sacrifice of the men and women who have served with honor aboard the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Taney. Our intention is to learn from history and celebrate the legacy of the ship and those who served aboard.”
The ship will, at least for now, be referred to by its hull identification WHEC 37, which stands for high endurance cutter, according to the foundation. The Taney name already has been removed from the ship’s stern.
“The name is being removed because it is a symbol of hate, repression and racial inequality,” said Chris Rowsom, executive director of the Historic Ships in Baltimore museum and vice president of Living Classrooms.
In a statement, U.S. Rep Andy Harris R-MD) said the removal of the name counters the foundation’s educational mission.
“Attempts to re-write shortcomings in our history, instead of using them to educate future generations, is a very bad idea — especially for a museum whose whole stated purpose is history.”

The timeless motto of all who attempt to erase history.
What was this guy’s crime?
Roger Taney was a pretty remarkable figure. First Catholic USSC justice, appointed by Andrew Jackson, served under 4 Presidents, was despised by Lincoln, was married to a sister of Francis Scott Key, died in poverty when his family holdings were bankrupted by the Civil War, his will freed all slaves still held by his family, died on the day slavery was abolished in MD.
His opinion was based on what he and the majority of other Justices interpreted in the Constitution, it was a 7-2 decision. The cure was to amend the Constitution, not legislate from the bench..
Hmm...
Isn’t sending a historic statue (or whatever) to a museum “so it can be displayed in context” the default solution that the politicians use to deal with their controversial/offensive public works of art?
What happens when the museum staff itself gets woke?
Read it for yourself. Even knowing that what appears on Wikipedia is part liberal propaganda, what he wrote in the Dred Scott decision was so racist that it was anathema to a large part of the population even considering the mores of the mid-1800's.
Yes this is true. In reality George Floyd was a violent street thug specializing in armed robbery. His first conviction for this offense was at the age of 13. Finally in 2009 his luck ran out and he served 5 years in prison for a string of armed robberies.
George Floyd was a punk completely self centered and without remorse. He was a drug addict involved with just about every illegal substance available on the street. His penultimate moment was being apprehend by the police moments after passing counterfeit money to local merchants. George Floyd met a self-induced thug's death, a well deserved death, dying in the street like the animal he was.
I was at Governor's Island in '85; she was moored there (or was it Campbell? Duane?, I can't remember which).
Reminds me of a line from Clint Eastwoods

Blm and libs wont ever stop,
Dr. Seuss and Justice Taney gone in the same week.
We are lucky it wasn’t all of us. Yet.
I read that about that “student”...
The guy was absent or late 273 days I believe, and the mother blamed the school!!!!!
Slavery was legal; it was constitutional at the time seven of the nine justices ruled. Whether or not the ruling was the spark that convinced Abraham Lincoln he would have to use the military to violently overthrow the pro-slavery U.S. Constitution is debatable.
We may never know what caused Lincoln to do what it did.
I am most definitely positive that my life’s career would not take the same path today.
These f*kers can kiss my ass.
"I can't believe they allow this movie to be shown on TV," he said.
"It's an inspiring and patriotic movie," I replied, "from World War II."
"I know," he said. "That's why I can't imagine that they would allow it to be shown on TV."
Actually the story was from last July after the "cancel culture" really gained movement following George Floyd's death. I found out about it only recently.
Do I have to go to the link to find out what this judge did that made this necessary - or at least desirable in someone’s eyes? Must have been simply awful!!!!!
I frankly couldn’t care less if Justice Roger “Dred Scott” Taney’s statue in Taneytown, MD was torn down, via the consent of the locals, crushed into rubble, then used to line a duck pond. Like the fraud denying SCOTUS justices of today, that idiot very well could have pushed us toward a/the Civil War with his ruling.
But I”m still not sure that erasing him entirely is the way to go. How does one learn from his mistakes if he is scrubbed entirely from existence?

Proud to say Andy Harris is my Representative.
They will be stopped. No one is currently allowed to say how.
The tricky part is restoring the Constitution.
How many people REALLY complained? How many knew who the boat was named after? I want to meet the jerks who are exploring every nook and cranny in the USA looking up every name and every misdeed they may have committed. When black people wake up and realized they are hated more then ever because of what the BLM terrorists have done they only have to look in the mirror for not STRONGLY condemning that hate group.
