Irv Cross, a key member of The NFL Today and CBS Sports for more than two decades following a career as a player and coach, died Sunday near his home in Roseville, Minn. He was 81.

Previously diagnosed with mild cognitive dementia, Cross told the Philadelphia Inquirer two years ago that he intended to donate his brain to Boston University researchers so they could study it for CTE, the brain disease that has plagued many former NFL players. It has been linked to concussions and repeated blows to the head.

Cross played for Ara Parseghian at Northwestern from 1958-1960 then was drafted in the seventh round by the Philadelphia Eagles. He spent six years with the Eagles and three with the Los Angeles Rams. He was twice voted to the Pro Bowl before spending two seasons as an assistant coach.

Damn, he was 81? I always thought he was younger than that. He was a good broadcaster. RIP.

He lived a long life. Mild cognitive issues affect every person as they get older. There are activities that help retain cognitive ability, such as dancing, playing card games, chess, doing word puzzles, etc.

Drafted in the seventh round...

The same round, I think, that NFL Today and CBS Sports drafted him.

I remember him as being one of the first football Affirmative Action studio commentators.

If he had even one original or insightful comment in 20 years, I missed it.

I remember Irv Cross in a good way. He, along with Brent Musburger and Phyliss George, did the pre-game and halftime shows for CBS in the 1970s and early 1980s.

IMHO, those were the glory years of the NFL.

RIP Irv.

My recollection is that he was a class act. I was at Iowa during their glory years and he was at Northwestern playing for Ara Parseghian's Wildcats. Saw him play. Helluva football player and seemed an all around decent fellow. RIP.

Now the only one left of the three is Musburger, as Phyllis George died last year.
