Cougar Encounter in Utah | Mountain Lion Stalks Me For 6 Minutes!

I found what I thought were bobcats on the trail during a run. Turns out they were cougar cubs and their mother was not happy to see me. She escorted me for over six minutes to get me away from her cubs. Although she was acting very aggressive, the cougar had no intent on hurting me. The mother cougar was most likely caught off guard and did what she had to do to protect her cubs. Mama, cubs, and I are safe.

Plenty of stones to throw.

That’s what I was thinking. Of course bending down to pickup a rock might make someone more vulnerable to attack.

The cougar made several bluff charges at the hiker trying to drive him away. Those were pretty scary.

What I can’t figure out is award the end of the clip where the cougar just suddenly bolts away as if it was scared.

If you see a quarter laying on the ground and you didn’t drop it. Leave it alone. It’s bait.

How about that? I still think I’d prefer a fistful of 10mm slugs. and if it attacks me and I kill it, I want that hide. That’s about the only way I’d want such a trophy.

“That’s a beautiful trail...”

Looks like a well [vehicle] traveled two track. I’d like to know its entry GPS coordinates.

I agree, it is quite a photo and much more enjoyable to see from a photograph than in real life.

It is possible the cat slipped as it jumped, but if you have spent time watching cats the situation where the cats legs are nearly 90 degrees different in orientation is what happens as a cat recovers from a fall and twists to land on its feet.

Regardless of exactly what happened with the mountain lion in the picture they definitely can jump tremendous distances. Even a house cat can get more than twice its body height off the ground in a casual jump.

Didn’t we see this same video a few weeks ago? All that’s old is new again.

Yup- He got lucky- the cat ‘May Not Have Been”
trying to actually attack, and was just driving him off- however, that’s not to say every cat with cubs is going to react that way- there are no rules when it comes to wild animals. Timothy Treadwell thought there were- thought he ‘understood them’, He didn’t, sadly it ended i ntragedy

Predators will attack easy targets, if they think their prey is easy prey they will attack, if they think their target may injure them when they attack....usually they will keep their distance.

.that is excluding maternal instinct or rabies..

This is why when dealing with most predators you make yourself seem like more trouble than you are worth!

A cougar will never out run a 240 gr swc ...

The running section of the test, CORRECT.
This is a multi-part test.

Situation awareness? Perhaps consider traveling with a dog.

RT (Reaction Time)? Mine can be measure on a kitchen clock.

Body tremors when stressed? After a hard exercise (HIIT) at max heart rate, I’d put my hands in ice water and towel off, salty sweat bad.

About one minute after max heart rate of 167 dropped to ~120. and in my personnal 15 Meter range.

Sight picture? YOU COULD BECOME SEASICK JUST FROM LOOKING!
Many train to time heartbeat and trigger pull.

Training level? More is better, never too much.

And many more variables... Miss one and you fail the test.
NO RETAKES.

This would be a fun test!
A more advanced version is used by biathlon shooters and others...

A high-intensity workout to run the heart up to maximum, take a reading and enjoy/compare with friends.

Many phone apps to measure heart rate.
220 minus age is close to your max heart rate.
