Maine groups for older people, teachers express support for COVID-19 vaccine rollout changes

Maine groups representing the state’s older population and school teachers are expressing support for the changes to the vaccine rollout strategy announced on Friday.

Gov. Janet Mills said the state is adopting an age-based approach, which replaces the phased-based system in place since mid-December.

Beginning Wednesday, Mainers 60 and older will be eligible to be vaccinated.

Mills said people 50 and older will become eligible in April, people 40 and older in May, people 30 and older in June and people younger than 30 in July.

The governor said the move was made to simplify the process and to get as many Mainers vaccinated as quickly as possible.

The timeline could be accelerated if the vaccine supply increases, the governor said.

The change to an age-based approach is based upon recent scientific data indicating that age is among the strongest predictors of whether an individual is likely to get seriously ill and die from COVID-19, even more so than risk factors such as underlying medical conditions.

AARP state director Lori Parham said her organization is supportive of the change and believes this will allow Maine’s most vulnerable to be vaccinated sooner.

“We know that overwhelmingly people 50 and older have been disproportionately impacted by COVID-19. They’ve become the sickest, many more in the category have died,” Parham said.

In Maine, 98% of deaths from COVID-19 have been people aged 50 and older.
