AFFAIRS OF THE NATION: THE PRESIDENT ELECT IN WASHINGTON; THE INCOMING ADMINISTRATION: All About the Change of Programme (2/26/1861)
New York Times archives – Times Machine ^ | 2/26/1861

WASHINGTON, Monday, Feb. 25.

Despite the exciting rumors brought to the city last night, Mr. LINCOLN slept and rested well. To-day President BUCHANAN, Mr. BRECKINRIDGE, Mr. CASS, Mr. STANTON, and other prominent Democrats called upon him.

Lord LYONS, and the Ministers from France, Russia, Prussia, Spain, and elsewhere, left their cards with Mr. LINCOLN, as did also the Secretaries of the various Legations.

Gen. SCOTT, Mr. SEWARD, and several prominent Republican Senators were closeted with him this morning, concerning the ceremonies connected with the inauguration.

At a general levee given by Mr. LINCOLN, several hundred gentlemen from all sections of the country paid their respects to him.

This afternoon he visited the Senate and House of Representatives. At the former place he was greeted heartily by one and all. When he went upon the floor of the house he was taken first to the Republican side, where, of course, he was greeted warmly; then he turned to the Democratic side, and a great majority of the members instantly rose and shook hands with him. PRYOR, GARNETT, and a few other gentlemen par excellence, did not rise, though their curiosity got the better of their sulkiness, and they stared most impudently.

He paid his respects to the Judges of the Supreme Court, at the Court-room, also.

Mr. GREELEY had an appointment with Mr. LINCOLN this morning, but through some hitch they failed to meet. Consequently GREELEY was admitted this evening, to the exclusion of all others, and spent three hours with him.

Intense interest is manifested on all sides here in reference to this issue.

Lincoln was owned by the railroad lobby.

[Lincoln visiting Congress] "...was taken first to the Republican side, where, of course, he was greeted warmly; then he turned to the Democratic side, and a great majority of the members instantly rose and shook hands with him.

Imagine that, Democrats impudent & sulking, who would have thought it?

"Lincoln was owned by the railroad lobby."

Just another of many lies told by our Lincoln-haters, without ever presenting evidence.
It's the equivalent to today's "Russia, Russia, Russia" claims against President Trump.

Just Democrats doing what Democrats by their natures do: lie like hades.

"From Charleston: Revenues and Custons-Davis and Lincoln – 7"

This piece also provides first hand accounts of a large Charleston SC cast iron & brass works (named Camron's) and the Charleston SC slave market.

Charleston's iron works do not figure prominently in reports on Confederate war production -- compared to, say, Tredegar in Richmond and others in Tennessee, Georgia & Alabama, I'm guessing because Charleston had no independent sources of raw materials.

The report on the Charleston slave market should give one pause to think...

The iron foundry at West Point, NY, said to have produced more cannons during the Civil War than all Confederate foundries combined:

"Where’s your evidence?"

So, you're a typical Democrat who thinks you're entitled to make wild accusations and force Republicans disprove them?

Whether it's Confederate Democrats accusing Lincoln of being "owned by the railroads" or our Progressive Democrats accusing Trump of "Russia, Russia, Russia", Democrats are the same now as they've always been.

Sad.

You haven’t said anything other than call me a Democrat, anti-Trump and a liar - none of which is true.

I have never voted for a Democrat in my 50 years of voting - and I’ve been on the Trump Train since 2015.

I made a statement that Lincoln was owned by the railroad lobby. It is a matter of record that his campaign was heavily financed by railroad tycoons who believed installing a career railroad lawyer (Lincoln) in the White House would help them federalize their transcontinental railway project.

You called me a liar without proof - you are one acting like a deranged Democrat.

No, I implied you're a liar because, like all Democrats, you are a liar, and your own words prove it.
Lincoln was no more "owned" by "railroad tycoons" than Donald Trump was "owned" by Vladimir Putin!
So your claim is absurd on the face of it, and typical of the way you Democrats think.

First of all, the issue in 1860 was not "federalizing" the transcontinental railroad -- that much was already fully agreed on.
The issue then was where, exactly, that railroad should run.
Republicans wanted a northern or central route, your Democrats wanted a Southern route.
And your Democrat president at the time, Jefferson Davis, had already spent US Federal dollars, the equivalent in today's terms of $65 billion, for the Gadsden Purchase from Mexico -- to provide land suitable for a transcontinental rail route that would pass near his house in Mississippi.
So, was Jefferson Davis also "owned" by railroad tycoons?

Second, and still more absurd, is the fact that even after approving the central route, and work begun in California, one of those "railroad tycoons" became Lincoln's Democrat opponent for reelection in 1864 -- George McClellan.
So, if McClellan already owned Lincoln, why would he run against him for President?

Now you claim you're not a Democrat, never were a Democrat, never voted Democrat and yet, and yet, you were raised as a Democrat and like all Democrats you were taught as a child to hate the United States and most especially, to hate Republicans.
And that's why you're so eager to believe the lies Democrats tell about Republican Lincoln, while utterly ignoring even worse behavior among your own dear leaders, like Jefferson Davis.

We disagree about Lincoln. So instead of discussing it rationally, you call me a Democrat and a liar.

You are ridiculous.

Sorry, but no, we don't "disagree" about Lincoln, you lied about Lincoln because lying about Republicans is what you Democrats were taught as children to do.

So, first you confess and withdraw your lie, then we'll have a reasoned discussion, my ridiculous FRiend.
