'Lucky to be alive' Tiger Woods is 'awake and responsive' in LA hospital after having metal rod inserted into his shattered right leg and screws and pins in his ankle - as video captures him driving minutes before horror crash

Tiger Woods is 'awake, responsive and recovering in his hospital room' after extensive surgery on Tuesday to his lower right leg and ankle, following a crash in California that police said he was lucky to survive.

Woods, 45, was put under general anesthetic at Harbor-UCLA hospital as surgeons fitted metal rods, screws and pins to his shattered right shinbone and calf bone following the crash, which happened around 7.15am Tuesday in south Los Angeles.

Anish Mahajan, chief medical officer at the hospital, said Woods suffered comminuted open fractures of his tibia and fibula - where the bone splinters into two or more pieces and comes through the skin - and had a rod inserted in his tibia, with his foot and ankle 'stabilized with a combination of screws and pins'.

Tell me why we should care about this one over any other?

Because it's Tiger. He has given immeasurable pleasure to millions over the years. Maybe you're not one of them, but if you don't recognize that there are lots of us who care about him, then maybe you're not aware enough to comment here on FR.

I was 64 when I fell. Actually one of my little dogs knocked me down from behind while I was bent over. I was almost able to keep from going down but didn’t quite manage it. That was a little over two years ago. The first two doctors made me stay off of it but they were podiatrists. I kept getting tendonitis so I went to the specialist. She is an orthopedic ankle/foot specialist. She said it will get better but might always be weak on unlevel surfaces. She said the two doctors never should have prevented me from using it and should have had me in therapy as soon as possible. I see a physical therapist now for strengthening exercises and my granddaughter is a physical therapy assistant. I’m not patient but I’m determined. I was very active prior to falling and I plan to get back to activities even if I have to wear a brace and boots.

I can tell you that your age is the key factor. I'm in my mid-70s and I started fading in my late 60s. It's just not there anymore.

It is much more difficult and sometimes impossible to recover and rehab back to full strength the older we get. Things heal slower. Arthritis starts to impinge. Parts starts to break down.

Our mind wants to but try as we might, our physical bodies don't cooperate well anymore.

We're not young and getting stronger. We're old and on the downhill slide of life physically.

Good luck.

Ben Hogan won a few more majors after his big wreck, but Hogan didn’t suffer the bad back like Tiger.

Hogan was 36, Tiger is 45.

I saw his long interview at the Genesis tournament site. He was visibly upset/sad. He was going to check on the healing process on his back in a couple of days with an MRI.

He looked like he was on pain meds for his recent back surgery, we'll never know, to toxicology will be done. This was really a big mistake on his part, in tennis they call it an unforced error and this will effectively end his career. He may play again, but not another major and likely not even another tournament win.

Blood clots are another concern, that’s what killed Derrick Thomas after his car accident.

He must have been texting, or something if not under the influence.

He’s lucky he didn’t hit another car.

Thanks! Luck to you too. My granddaughter told me the same thing. She said if I work at it really hard but take my time that I could regain a lot but it will never be as strong as it was. She said the tendons get brittle as we age and don’t respond to healing like they used to. I’m taking collagen supplements to help and going slow. I was riding a mountain bike in the woods on rail trails 30 miles two or three days a week and walking 3-5 miles when I didn’t ride. In fact, I rode 30 miles the day before I fell. I don’t see me back to that level but if I can ride the bike on flats and walk a couple of miles I will be very happy. The doctor said not to even think about running and I told her I didn’t run before and I didn’t plan to start now. LOL I have a stationary bike, a treadmill, and an elliptical in the house and she said to start working out on those as long as it doesn’t cause pain and wear the brace while working out. I actually am pretty much arthritis free except for what the fall caused to the foot.

We have a farm and my husband isn’t able to do much. I always took care of the outside work like push mowing, etc. Our daughter and SIL live on the farm and do a lot of the hard work. I have done my mowing the last two years but wore the CAM boot. I’ll probably have to wear that for hard outside work from now on. Right now my main focus is on walking so that I can start walking my little dogs again. I’ll be glad when my granddaughter gets her degree to be a full physical therapist. LOL

Thanks for the encouragement! Going from being so active to doing nothing overnight has been depressing. :-)

I was a marathoner and did strength training 3 days a week until my late 60's. Got the crud from my 3 year old granddaughter we are raising which turned into bronchitis and then got infected and turned into pneumonia when I was 69.

I recovered but could tell I had lost a step or two when I came back and it has never been the same since.

I struggle to walk now without being short of breath and doing physical lifting and exertion here on our cattle farm is a killer sometimes.

It will never be the same again.

I'm just sayin'....

“You think the carsales will suffer?”

He implied the opposite.

That car I think lists for over $80,000? The car is seen crossing the lane, then the meridian into the other lane.

Those cars should have bells and whistles, and vibrating steering once you leave your lane.

So, what happened?

A. Texting?
B. Under the influence and passed out?
C. Car malfunction?
D. Dropped something in his lap and lost control?
E. None of the above?

I’m betting on B.
