There has, historically, been a widely held and asserted expectation of quarantine in the case of exceptionally dangerous illnesses. However, this is not at all what the proponents of mandated vaccines are calling for. Quarantine is simply the demand that those who are already infected with a disease remain isolated in their homes or elsewhere until they are no longer able to infect others.

This is profoundly different from what the pro-mandate crowd demands: that those who are not infected undergo a medical procedure to minimize their chances of becoming infected. This is a much more intrusive demand and a potentially dangerous one.

Jacobson v. Massachusetts, 197 U.S. 11 (1905), SCOTUS allowed compulsory vaccination, and affirmed it in Zucht v. King, 260 U.S. 174 (1922). When the practice of personal liberty inherently puts others liberty at risk, the state has the right to act to protect the liberty of everyone. Not to be naive, people being people means how to make this decision, on what basis, is usually a hard fought political battle. Looking at the history of the case, in the 1900 to 1920, communicable diseases were a leading cause of death. Before the 1918 flu smallpox was extremely dangerous. Vaccines were a solution that worked. There were risks, however these were less than not vaccinating.

This brings up two problems with libertarianism. Libertarians are so focused on the individual, they forget the individual is a part of a society, and everyone in society has rights too. When the liberty or rights of one transgress on the liberty and rights of someone else, in the U.S. and other countries legislatures pass laws and courts make decisions to deal with that. Second, libertarians tend to ignore how we got to where we are when it gets in their way, then act as if a philosophical argument makes all that history go away.

Which is not humanly possible.

You cannot protect the liberty of everyone with state intervention.

The minute the state steps in, someone’s liberty is going to be trampled for the alleged sake of someone else’s liberty and usually it’s the liberty of the vast majority to accommodate the preferences of a small minority.

And it’s not solely for philosophical reasons. But health reasons. If YOU want to protect yourself against the virus, then YOU get vaccinated.....simple. I’ll take my chances.
