The window for ice fishing on Fernan Lake opened long enough for Bill Hendrickson and Pat Brady to venture out Tuesday for the first time.
“I just caught a trout,” Hendrickson said as he walked back to the chairs they had set around the holes they cut in the ice, some 100 yards from shore.
It was 16 to 18 inches, he said, the first of what they hoped would be many. Perch, crappie and bass were also swimming below the surface, just waiting to be reeled in.
“It’s kind of like a mystery,” Hendrickson said. “You never know what you’re going to pull out of the ice.”
Even if the fish aren’t biting, ice fishing is always a good day for the anglers as they enjoyed the peace, quiet and beauty that comes with being far from others going about their daily routines in Coeur d’Alene and surrounding towns.
“There ain’t much other people,” Brady said with a laugh. “You gotta find some way to fish.”
“It’s fun. We just love fishing,” Hendrickson said. That’s all we do.”
The men moved every so often, to keep warm in the 27-degree conditions, with snow falling, too. Bundled up to fend off the cold, they brought with them coffee, smokes, conversation and patience.
Hendrickson stood up, grabbed the auger, walked about 15 yards away, and quickly drilled a hole through the ice they estimated was a solid 5-inches thick.
Perfectly safe, both men agreed.
“There are some guys playing hockey out there a couple days ago,” he said.
“I could drive an ATV on it,” Brady said.

Besides, how can you NOT get a kick out of that headline?
My wife is taking off tomorrow to go skiing just up the road from Fernan Lake.
Wait...they ain’t fishing...there’s no beer...
I love fishing, but without the ice or snow. I hate cold weather.
Don't forget the beer!
Enjoy it while you can. CDL and Sandpoint have become infested with californicators.
Years ago my sister had a guy from Australia visit her in Minneapolis during the winter. He asked what all those people were doing out on the lake as they walked through the city park.
She told them they were ice fishing. He thought she was pulling his leg and made her walk way out there so he could see!
Two things missing from the article...
What was used for a lure?
Which brand of whiskey produces the best results?
Both the headline and the story remind me of a Letterkenny Cold Open
That is absolutely hilarious! Never saw that before. Just sent it to the whole family. Thanks for adding that to the thread!
Used to go fishing with my dad for bass and crappie in the reservoirs north of NYC in the winter months. This was like 1960. They were deep bodies of water. We never strayed beyond the rocky shorelines and railroad tracks. Muscoot. Croton.
The reservoirs never froze over completely just in spots. We caught dozens of large and smallmouth bass and crappie. Garcia rods and reels. Fred Arbogast plugs. Killies. Nightcrawlers.
Mom hated we would stay out all day after leaving at 5:30 in the morning. Then she'd have to clean the fish for frying when we returned. God they were good. Dad passed in '05.
Still have the memories.
From the title, I thought they got a ticket for not wearing a mask.
The show is hilarious. Not vulgar, not exactly wholesome either, but well written, not politically correct entertainment.
Good memories!
When my dad was a boy, he used to capture skunks around the Kensico Reservoir in the late 20s and early 30s and sell the pelts. He used to tell great stories about getting sprayed and what Oma did to clean him up!
Friends Fined For not wearing Face Fur?
Now try saying the title of the article 3 times fast.
Oops...
Friends Fined For not wearing Face Fur on Furnan.
Aaargh...
Friends Fined For not wearing Face Fur on Fernan.
Me too. When I was little I went ice fishing at Lake Erie with my dad and brother. My brother pushed snow and slush back into the hole when we were done and I fell into the hole. Luckily it was only one leg. Never been back. I do fish almost every day now outside my door here in the Gulf of Mexico.
I would totally love to do that.
A couple deep freezes usually runs them out and down to New Mexico...
