I figured it was time for a nice feel-good story about friends out ice fishing.
Besides, how can you NOT get a kick out of that headline?
My wife is taking off tomorrow to go skiing just up the road from Fernan Lake.

I love fishing, but without the ice or snow. I hate cold weather.

Bundled up to fend off the cold, they brought with them coffee, smokes, conversation and patience. Don't forget the beer!

Two things missing from the article...
What was used for a lure?
Which brand of whiskey produces the best results?

"Besides, how can you NOT get a kick out of that headline?" Both the headline and the story remind me of a Letterkenny Cold Open

Don't care how thick they say the ice is, I would
never sit in the middle of a friggin' lake like those guys are doing.
Used to go fishing with my dad for bass and crappie in the reservoirs north of NYC in the winter months. This was like 1960. They were deep bodies of water. We never strayed beyond the rocky shorelines and railroad tracks. Muscoot. Croton.
The reservoirs never froze over completely just in spots. We caught dozens of large and smallmouth bass and crappie. Garcia rods and reels. Fred Arbogast plugs. Killies. Nightcrawlers.
Mom hated we would stay out all day after leaving at 5:30 in the morning. Then she'd have to clean the fish for frying when we returned. God they were good. Dad passed in '05.
Still have the memories.

It seems to be a bit late, to me. In Minnesota, ice fishing shanties are (or, at least, were) required to be removed from the lakes by February 15.

When I was kid, we used to icefish on Fernan Lake. We only kept the trout.
I had a friend who drowned in Fernan Lake. He was a passenger in a car that went into the lake and none of the four passengers got out. Yes, alcohol was involved.

I once lived in CDA. Fernan Lake is one of the sweetest parts of town. The whole town was lovely then , but it’s getting wrecked by idiot people from other states who think trees are for cutting down.

I drove by Coeur d’Alene, Idaho on a cross country trip. No time to stop, but it looked like a picture postcard place. I hope to go there and spend some time some day.
