This Is the Most Hated Rock Band of All Time, According to Data

Music—specifically popular rock music—can have a polarizing effect on listeners. One fan's favorite band is the one another person detests most. As head-scratching as it may be, there are even people who hate the Beatles. That's because art is subjective by nature, so it's difficult to assess with an analytical or mathematical approach. But that didn't stop us from trying to do just that. At Best Life, we set out to use data to determine the most hated rock band of all time.

Once we had our list, we looked at five key metrics, from expert opinions to fan surveys. To start, we looked at LA Weekly's list of the top 20 worst bands of all time. Then we turned our attention to Vice's list of the 123 worst musicians of all time. Since the list was not ranked, if a band was on the list, it got points added to its score; if it wasn't, no points were added. Then we looked at the top 21 most overly hated bands according to Ultimate Guitar, a popular music and guitar instruction website. Finally, we used two polls from Ranker, the 102 most overrated bands and the 421 worst rock bands of all time.

We then assigned each metric a weighted value* before running them through our exclusive algorithm to see how each artist scored on our 100-point scale Hated Band Index. Read on to discover which group was deemed the most hated rock band of all time, based on the numbers.

Do you know that they blame Free Republic for their downfall?

If that is true, it is awesome!

Sorry, I got King Crimson mixed up with King Diamond, who was atrocious and evil, at least to me. Thanks for helping me correct that.

Yep, we were the ones, before Twitter and all the others, who gave them the negative airplay. I used to be a fan and had followed them from their previous band and they were p!$$ed at FR.

I went to a lot of concerts in the mid 90’s. Lollapalooza music festival tickets cost about $40; today $350. The clubs in NYC were super cheap. I saw a Shed Seven at the old CBGB’s for under $10. $15 was the usual rate for concerts. The highest I paid was $20 each to see Blur and then Radiohead at the Roseland Ballroom.

Two years ago I went to see Depeche Mode at Mohegan Sun with my daughter; tickets cost almost $300. (I had seen them 10 years prior for $80). Fantastic seats, but what a price!

"...I used to have long hair, had to cut it for work. Girlfriend dumped me, and ended up with 'Heavy Metal Goldilocks, tryin' to look tough'. How shallow...."

Reminds me of an old Lenny Bruce routine....

Wise Chinese restaurant owner to newly divorced Bruce:

Ahhh, so pretty...but you better off!!

I posted something similar. Grunge killed the fun in music for a long time. It wasn’t until after Cobain died and Pearl Jam went anti-MTV that music hit a little mini-renaissance in the mid 90’s.

Interesting comments on this thread. I'm surprised that in more than 100 posts, no one posted the complete list.

I do not understand the hate for Rush. Musically, they did some really interesting things. I can kinda understand some folks not being partial to Geddy Lee's voice.

My musical tastes are pretty strange according to most folk. I'll listen to almost anything. Classic rock, prog, bluegrass, both old and modern country, classical, jazz, and even a bit of what I call modern 'angry' stuff. There is a lot of garbage out there, and always has been, but there are also gems by groups that you wouldn't expect that you occasionally find that are simply stunning.

For those out there really interested in music you might want to check out Rick Beato's youtube vids called "What Makes This Song Great". He picks tunes apart in a way that I find to be really interesting. I'll admit that some of the music theory he gets to is a bit over my head, but even with tunes that I don't particularly care for, I can see his point.

For the Rush Haters out there... Here's WMTSG picking apart Limelight.

Oddly, I hear Pink Floyd in some of Puccini and have partied with bikers at bluegrass festivals

It’s all good, but Nickleback gets what they deserve ;)

I’m not surprised; he was quite the guitarist and performed with other bands. The solo album probably let him shine doing his own thing. Like I said, individually DT was crazy talented but seemed like they were demonstrating their technical capabilities more than playing as a team.
