Music—specifically popular rock music—can have a polarizing effect on listeners. One fan's favorite band is the one another person detests most. As head-scratching as it may be, there are even people who hate the Beatles. That's because art is subjective by nature, so it's difficult to assess with an analytical or mathematical approach. But that didn't stop us from trying to do just that. At Best Life, we set out to use data to determine the most hated rock band of all time.
Once we had our list, we looked at five key metrics, from expert opinions to fan surveys. To start, we looked at LA Weekly's list of the top 20 worst bands of all time. Then we turned our attention to Vice's list of the 123 worst musicians of all time. Since the list was not ranked, if a band was on the list, it got points added to its score; if it wasn't, no points were added. Then we looked at the top 21 most overly hated bands according to Ultimate Guitar, a popular music and guitar instruction website. Finally, we used two polls from Ranker, the 102 most overrated bands and the 421 worst rock bands of all time.
We then assigned each metric a weighted value* before running them through our exclusive algorithm to see how each artist scored on our 100-point scale Hated Band Index. Read on to discover which group was deemed the most hated rock band of all time, based on the numbers.

Well-their behavior would ALWAYS interfere with what ever talent they may possess.
It would preclude my EVER enjoying them because I’d be thinking about their insult to the country and at a time that could not have been worse.. Un-American is Un-American....That’s just me
I guess we agree that critics are nitwits...
I’m the same. And the fact that Walsh is constantly touring with the Eagles instead of making his own music makes me hate the Eagles more. I mean I don’t begrudge him the money. But I want more Joe Walsh.
We can and I'll agree to disagree. This isn't a South American football league where rooting for the other team means a fight to the death.
I had front row seats for a Fleetwood Mac Concert in the mid 70's. Joe Walsh warmed them up. It was back in the day he was pretty messed up, I can remember seeing that he could barely stand up on stage :)
I guess today’s Tom Sawyers weren’t voting this time ...
I’m not a big Dream theatre fan but John Petrucci’s solo albums are another level of awesome.
You can count me in on that demographic.
My list would include the Guess Who. Although they waxed some good tunes such as “Shakin’ All Over” and “No Time,” their anti-American cheap shot “American Woman” lands them in my dog house. Same with Bruce Springsteen’s group for “Born in the USA.” Queen is also on that list because of its name.
Yeah he as pretty drunk for a long time. I remember saw him on Letterman around the time Got Any Gum came out, which was right after the Northridge quake. Letterman asked him about the quake, Walsh said he woke up on the floor and was vibrating and his first thought was “I didn’t think I drank that much last night”. Funny, but also a little sad. Luckily he’s cleaned up.
I definitely agree with Nickelback, Dave Matthews Band and Coldplay being on this list. There are others on the list that I don’t care to listen to, but that’s just me. But I can’t believe Linkin Park, Nirvana and Mumford & Sons are on the list. As for the Beatles, I can’t stand listening to them. Their music is so awful and dated it’s pathetic. They should have been number two on the list.
Any list that leaves off Train isn’t worth reading.
the Black Crows... they thought spitting on the crowd was cool years back. ZZ Top booted them off the tour for it. losers...
I know a lot of people who love the doors. They never caught on with me for some reason. Maybe the one song. I did enjoy there documentary. Actually a lot of these bands documentaries are interesting. Those guys partied.
A girl I know who is into country-western music says that they do. She argues that they don't do real country-western music and are really a rock group. I've never heard anything they did, but it's a safe bet that they don't sound anything like Kitty Wells or Patsy Cline.
They were using their popularity to take cheap shots at America
NOT GOOD
Some of the bands on this list are overrated, not most hated. The Doors? Radiohead? Hated, really?
I personally can’t stand the sound of Bob Dylan’s voice, but his songwriting skills are excellent.
Glad to see grunge bands on the list: Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Green Day. Grunge came to popularity when I was in High school and it took the fun out of music, so all I listened t was Depeche Mode and the like.
Say what you will about hair metal, but despite the mundane lyrics, many of those 80’s rockers had mad talent, like Steve Vai on guitar, Dave Lombardo on drums, Steve Harris on bass guitar, King Diamond on vocals, etc.
If Metallica had only released their first 4-5 albums, they would have been the most beloved band in metal. But they let fame get to their heads and became everything they claimed to despise. They deserve to be onthat list.
As for the top 3, Creed, Limp Bizkit, Nickelback was to be expected, but I never understood the hate. They’re just mediocre bands that had big followings.
Do you know that they blame Free Republic for their downfall?
