Man freezes his jeans to ‘reserve’ parking spots, inspires others

A Chicago man devised an unorthodox way to reserve a parking spot — by freezing his denim pants, so they stand upright in the desired space. His only-in-the-Windy-City method of calling dibs has taken social media by storm.

“Polar vortex fun: pants with nobody inside them!” wrote West Ridge’s Adam Selzer in a tweet with more than 1,300 likes. An accompanying photo shows his frozen pants standing in a parking spot as if H.G. Wells’ “Invisible Man” is guarding the space.

To accomplish the in-jean-ious lifehack, the local tour guide explains that one simply needs to soak a pair of britches and place them outside. “In about 20 minutes you can form them to shape, and in another 20 they’re solid,” Seltzer writes.

“It’s a Chicago tradition.”

Why is it that “tradition” requires so often ignoring of the laws that were put there for the people? The reason I find in a few sites this started is because people shoveled snow to put their car there. There is no law that allows any blocking action and there are a couple of laws that deny it. Whereas I empathize with the people that have to deal with snow, where were their cars while they were shoveling and why couldn’t they stay there?

What is comes down to is creating a convenience for one person at the loss of anothers. But damaging another’s property for this is a crime, period. And there have been reports of everything from busting an antennas, slashing tires, busting out window, keying cars, to threats of bodily damage that now can put this little problem into a possible felony situation.

If they can’t find a place then they need to park further away and wait for a slot at some point to open up when someone drives off, talk to the manager about renting a slot, if they will, buying a home location that has parking specifically for them, or moving to another area that doesn’t have the problem. But knowingly breaking the law for this is self centered and criminal by law. Harming other’s property is worse. And the cops not supporting the law should be terminated. They are there to protect people’s property along with their person. If the cops are ignoring the law which leads to the violence, they are not doing their job.

9-1-10: - PROHIBITED ACTS AND CONDITIONS:

It shall be unlawful:
B. Obstruction To Streets, Alleys, Sidewalks Or Other Public Ways: For any person to cause. or create, or maintain any obstruction on any public street, alley, sidewalk or other public way, except as may be specifically authorized by any provision of this Code or by the Public Works Director when necessary in an emergency or in connection with any lawful construction, repair or removal work.

Chicago’s municipal code:

10-28-070 Storage of goods on public ways.

(a)(1) Except as otherwise specifically permitted by this Code, no person shall use any public way for the storage of personal property, goods, wares or merchandise of any kind. Nor shall any person place or cause to be placed in or upon any public way, any barrel, box, hogshead, crate, package or other obstruction of any kind, or permit the same to remain thereon longer than is necessary to convey such article to or from the premises abutting on such sidewalk.

All public streets, alleys, sidewalks and other public ways (including but not limited to parkways, bicycle paths and multipurpose trails) in the City shall be under the supervision of the Public Works Director, He shall be charged with the enforcement of all provisions relating to such public places (except for traffic provisions) and is hereby authorized to enforce such provisions. The Economic and Community Development Director (or assigned designee) shall also be authorized to enforce provisions related to streets, alleys, sidewalks and other public ways as it relates to building and code enforcement.

I find it amusing that adults (?) are using a children’s term to try to cheat someone else for their purposes. I find them even more unintelligent for people to harm other’s property because their victim wouldn’t be bullied doing what was legal by parking their car in a public space. But then again, determining from reports that 15 people were shot, and 3 to death in Chicago, this last weekend alone, I can understand the neanderthal thinking that over rules intelligent law abiding citizens. It’s one of the reasons I feel that Illinois is the number two state in the union that is realizing the amount of people moving out of state with a 66% loss. They are only behind New Jersey and just ahead of New York. Does the movie “Escape From New York” ring a bell?
