What took place at the Capitol on January 6 was undoubtedly a politically motivated riot. As such, it should not be controversial to regard it as a dangerous episode. Any time force or violence is introduced into what ought to be the peaceful resolution of political conflicts, it should be lamented and condemned.
But none of that justifies lying about what happened that day, especially by the news media. Condemning that riot does not allow, let alone require, echoing false claims in order to render the event more menacing and serious than it actually was. There is no circumstance or motive that justifies the dissemination of false claims by journalists. The more consequential the event, the less justified, and more harmful, serial journalistic falsehoods are.
Yet this is exactly what has happened, and continues to happen, since that riot almost seven weeks ago. And anyone who tries to correct these falsehoods is instantly attacked with the cynical accusation that if you want only truthful reporting about what happened, then you’re trying to “minimize” what happened and are likely an apologist for if not a full-fledged supporter of the protesters themselves.
One of the most significant of these falsehoods was the tale — endorsed over and over without any caveats by the media for more than a month — that Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick was murdered by the pro-Trump mob when they beat him to death with a fire extinguisher. That claim was first published by The New York Times on January 8 in an article headlined “Capitol Police Officer Dies From Injuries in Pro-Trump Rampage.” It cited “two [anonymous] law enforcement officials” to claim that Sicknick died “with the mob rampaging through the halls of Congress” and after he “was struck with a fire extinguisher.”

Check the underground streetcar tunnels leading to the Capital. A perfect way to get ANTIFA to Capital Hill without camera footage.
The narrative hasn’t been repeated enough to become absolute truth!
But nothing. Force is always to be condemned. Got it.
The "peaceful resolution of political conflict," like voting last November? I don't hear GG condemning what was introduced into that. Or even "lamenting" it.
He's got a whole lot to say about Julian Assange, not so much about a stolen US election.
Just another pearl clutcher swooning about January 6.
I was wondering about those very same lines in Greenwald’s article. I can only imagine how he would have written about those political conflicts of the last quarter of the 18th Century between the colonists and those powdered-wig wearing redcoat guys.
Agree, but do the Dems control the press or does the press control them?
Why wait for a FOIA? Why isn’t the family demanding it and if they don’t get it, have one done themselves?
Exactly.
Founders would have been ashamed of these squishes. If the British had stolen our first election, the Founders would have waged another revolution. Steal one election, and you’ve stolen them all, because none are secure after that. You could blow the entire Capitol complex to smithereens and do less damage to the nation, than the Dems did on November 3, 2020.
And by the way, those who claim to abhor violence ought to show a little interest in the murder of Ashli Babbitt.
If only Rossini were still alive, he could compose an Overture inspired by her bravery, in the face of all the horrible carnage
Of course it can be both. Haven't you seen live video of situations where there were both Antifa and conservative protestors in the same place? That happens all the time.
Why would it be impossible for some Antifa supporters to be mixed in with Trump supporters? You can see that very thing happening on video recorded on January 6th.
The question is who was doing what. Historically the government and the media and our political elites have not reacted much at all to protests in the capital building. Take a look at the protestors who disrupted the Kavanaugh hearings and took over the offices of senators. How many of them are facing 10 years in jail? How many senators and representatives called that protest an insurrection?
If the vandalism and rioting at the capital building was done by Antifa members mixed in with the Trump supporters who strolled through the building between the rope lines that makes a difference in how the situation should be perceived.
Bump
Greenwald is having a “Leo 2.0” (Leo Terrell) moment. The truth about the “left”, its lies and liars, esp. in the media, have finally gotten to him enough for himt o write about this disinformation, deceit, and psychopathic anti-Trump media.
I’ll cut him some slack on a few comments, but he is interested in getting to the “truth”, and not promulgating communist and black extremist propaganda pronouncements in liberal rags.
The article calls it a “Pro-Trump mob” when we all know it was comprised of Antifa-BLM types who organized it in advance, almost certainly with the coordination of Pelosi’s people.
