"Editorials – 1, 3
COTTON SUPPLY" Again we see the all-important numbers regarding international cotton supplies & demands.
The numbers clearly show that the US maintained its 80% share of international cotton exports by increasing production more than 50% in the past seven years.
It also shows there are many other potential sources for cotton, should civil war restrict US exports.
This would seem to be a strong argument for keeping peaceful relations, but it appears likely that when the time comes Confederate leaders will be more moved by "other considerations".

((a little historical perspective...) )
To: BroJoeK
The Democrats of 1860, like the Democrats of today, were economic illiterates.
Starting the Civil War did not mean the UK would send troops to preserve its cotton supplies. It meant that the price of cotton worldwide would skyrocket. And almost overnight, the British Empire, including Egypt, would replace the supply from the American South. Not only did they commit political suicide, but economic suicide. It's the law of supply and demand that Democrats, including Nobel laureates, can't seem to understand.
