Survey finds boats bypassing I-87 inspection station
The Adirondack Almanack ^ | June 3, 2020 | Editorial Staff

Boat counters on the Northway for the Memorial Day weekend say that 89% of the trailered motorboats traveling north into the Adirondacks on Interstate 87 passed the inspection/decontamination station without stopping, according to the Adirondack Council.

It is illegal to transport invasive plants, fish or wildlife from one water body to another in New York. The surest way to avoid contaminating one lake, pond or river with species from another is to have the boat inspected and cleaned by trained personnel. New York has installed a network of inspection stations in and around the Adirondack Park.

Boat inspections and decontaminations are free, but the state hasn’t required boaters to stop at the inspection stations. The Adirondack Council and others want better protection.

Aggressive, non-native plants and aquatic wildlife can overwhelm local plants and wildlife, changing entire ecosystems. Removing them is usually impossible. Controlling their spread has cost state and Adirondack local governments tens of millions of dollars each year.

“The Northway inspection station is one of the easiest and most visible boat-cleaning facilities in the state,” said Adirondack Council Executive Director William C. Janeway. “The entire process takes about five minutes and the rest area offers great local food as part of an interesting Adirondack visitors’ center.

“Yet fewer than 11% of all boat transporters stopped at the rest area, and only 9% approached the inspection station,” he explained. “At least two percent of boaters used another part of the rest area and avoided the inspection station when they left. Even some who parked near the inspection station then went around it as they left.”

I'm assuming most of the boaters who bypass the inspections actually clean out their own boats, but I could be wrong.

I tried to find out if there was a fee for this cleaning and could not. I doubt it’s free. That may be one reason. Another is that it may take a long time to do. If there is a line and it takes, say forty minutes, you could spend hours in line.

Can you imagine having a wife who didn’t really want to go anyway and a couple of small children and spending several hours waiting to get your boat cleaned? Add that by the time you are back on the road from your boating trip, everyone is tired and you’ll be arriving home well after dark with everyone in a bad mood.

People in general simply don’t want to be inconvenienced and probably don’t see invasive species as their problem.

“...ay that 89% of the trailered motorboats traveling north into the Adirondacks on Interstate 87 passed the inspection/decontamination station without stopping...”

Because these folks are pulling their boats to their new homes in other states. Adios New York!

They already have tons of snake-heads in the Putrified Apple and Albany, specifically including Cuomo the Cuck - so what’s the big problem if more snake-heads arrive? And if Gubner Cuck never heard of snake-heads - a mirror will update him.

While I agree with you, the idea of higher taxes is remote and abstract compared with a cranky wife and whiney kids. The one is a potential in the future while the other is real and immediate.

Who wrote that headline? I mean, shouldn't it be Drivers towing boats bypassing inspection station?

Unless I-87 got flooded recently..flooded so much that you can boat on it...😀

Boating inspection stations, in my opinion, are a
necessary evil. Getting your boat inspected in parts
of New Mexico are mandatory where trout fishing is
a huge industry. I could easily be wiped out by
invasive species, plants, and disease. There are
cleaning stations along the San Juan river and
Navajo Lake, where fly fishermen are required to
clean there gear before they wade in the water.
It’s worth the hassle when you’ve hooked that 5lb
rainbow on a flyrod.

Do not the boats being towed bypass the station if the driver chooses to drive by the station while towing the boat?

Only way a boat can go by anything when it is on land is if it is being towed on a trailer or on a car or truck. But even a Fifth grader would know that. And since the earliest grade you learn inference is seventh grade geometry (eighth in some places), you have to be smarter than a Fifth Grader to understand the headlines.

Go troll somewhere else since you are definitely not smarter than a fifth grader.

Those boats must identify as illegal refugees and hence can spread disease to all waters, people, places.

I was commenting on the headlines, which looks like it was written by a bunch of fifth grader...

I know boats on the highways are either being towed by trucks/SUVs, on roofs of cars/trucks/camping trailers or in trunks of cars (like my Zodiac was back in the 1970s..).

The headline of this post seems like boats were bypassing the inspection station, not vehicles towing boats bypassing inspection station...

Go troll DU, you moron...

Funny how you say you know but yet you troll the OP. You are not even smarter than a first grader. Even your trolling isn’t that smart.

But will they, though? Aren't most lakes ecosystems handled by the State parks departments? Maybe some owned by county or big cities as municipal water supply, but doesn't the State still handle most recreational and nature-related stuff on the Lakes? But yes, even if local taxes do go up some, people are much more likely to attribute it to schools or police, than they are to anything else.

I don’t know the area, I figured I87 was some kind of water canal something. It definitely reads like people are boating past the station, not trailering past it.
