I harvested the first two Meyer lemons from the lemon tree in my Green house. Excellent. and it’s 32 degrees here. Tomatoes and other plants started for spring are moving real slow. Must be the double bubble wrap really takes the UV out of the sunlight.

Greetings from southern New Hampshire!

Our planning for the spring includes cattle panel trellises. We are going to incorporate them with our existing raised beds and in what is left of “my” garden, which has been reduced with the addition of our RV.

I want to plant cucumbers, green beans and other climbers. This spring is going to be busy! Barb has done wonderful work in the basement in preparation for planting. She has a large container of Parrot Feather wintering over to go in our bog filter and ponds. We pulled a bunch of stuff out and loaded it in our box trailer to worry about in the spring.

Getting ready for the ext snowmageddon.

I have a question: what’s a good way to get rid of weed seeds in soil?

I have a number of small gardens around my house, and I’m hoping to sell it some time this year, so I want to rehabilitate all these gardens that have gone to pot, so the house will look good. However, when I plant my various flowers, I don’t want all sorts of ugly crab grass, dandelions and so on sprouting all around them.

Any help will be great!

The only thing really going in my lower Midwest location is a send round of buds on my southern facing Christmas cactus. It should bloom again in about 10 days.

Hunkered down with a major ice storm going on. The NWS warning was for a “severe, crippling ice storm”. Yesterday was “prep” day - got all the gas cans filled for the generator, food in the house (actually, after an ‘inventory’, we had plenty, no trip to grocery necessary), got vehicles in the garage (cleaning snow off vehicles is ok, ice is bad), and being on a well, took a shower, washed hair, etc. Some folks were also getting laundry done. If the power goes out, it could be out for days.

So far so good .... power still on at 11:30, but freezing rain should continue until about 9 tonight. Temp is 31 ... hope it will make it above freezing, but it’s not supposed to get higher than 32. Tree limbs, which had snow on them from the storm a couple of days ago (very little melting happened after that) are beginning to noticeably sag.

I went out about an hour ago to put down some feed for the birds. The 3 does that hang out have been visiting the bird feeder area at night to clean up cracked corn that I put out. The bird feeders are frozen, so I’ve shoveled snow to make bare patches - put down a pile of corn with black oil sunflower seeds on top. The bird feeding area is a “happening place” right now. Getting down the front iced up steps was a bit of an adventure.

Relatives in FL - 84 yesterday, mowing & putting down fertilizer on the yard ... telling me Spring has arrived. I’m telling them to send Spring north ... in a hurry!!

Iron Dog Snowmachine Race starts in AK today - one of my very favorite sporting events - once that starts, I’ll have something to occupy my mind other than worrying about the ice storm. I’m taking it an hour at a time - every hour the power stays on is a blessing!!

4 inches if snow which is like 3 feet in Wisconsin and I have 3 Cherokee purple tomato seeds that popped in the greenhouse. 50% humidity levels and life is good.

So here’s a lesson for me, as a fledgling landscaper: The client initially maintenance-free shrubs, so I installed maintenance-free. Then he said he wanted color, as in colored flowers, and walked me to a neighbor’s yard which had Crimpson Pigmy Barberry, which has red leaves, not flowers. So now, 5 months later, I understand he has no idea. So I am redrawing my plan with red-leafed shrubs. There’s always something.

Transparent butterfly, is a rare species of butterfly found mainly in Central America, which has
transparent wings because the tissues between the veins do not have the colored scales present in
other butterflies.

How are you guys making out?

I saw the forecast for TX and LA.

Hard freezes, temps in the single digits, snow and ice.

I sure hope everyone has their tender vegetation protected.

This week Central Missouri is locked in the freezer along with everyone else. We’ve been getting snow pretty much every day, and with temps staying in the single digits there is no melting.

We have wood on the woodpile, propane in the tank, and groceries in the pantry. Cats are going stir crazy. It’s so cold they don’t even want to go out and sit under a bird feeder. Puppy likes the snow and would like to play out longer than this human is willing to tolerate the cold. lol
