‘It was angry, vicious’: spate of squirrel attacks leave NYC neighborhood in fear
Guardian ^ | Dec, 2020

At least three people in Rego Park, in Queens, have been jumped upon and bitten by a possibly deranged squirrel

New York City is not known for hair-raising animal experiences – save for the odd pizza-loving rat – but one city neighborhood is being subjected to an unwelcome slice of the wild by being terrorized by a highly aggressive squirrel.

At least three people in Rego Park, in the borough of Queens, have been jumped upon and bitten by the possibly deranged squirrel in recent weeks. The tree-based rodent’s reign of terror has made some people in the area afraid to go outside without being armed with pepper spray or other anti-squirrel weaponry.

“A few people are quite scared,” Micheline Frederick, a local resident, told Guardian US. Frederick was herself targeted by the squirrel in a bloody attack on 21 December, when she was holding her front door open for furniture movers.

“Suddenly the squirrel ran up my leg and I thought ‘it’s a small rodent, how bad could this be’, so I stood completely still and they next thing I knew the blood started to fly. It was a wrestling match that got very bloody very quickly,” Frederick said.

Frederick’s lengthy solo struggle with the squirrel – the furniture movers fled inside her house to safety - was captured by her neighbor’s security camera. The footage shows blood on Frederick and nearby snow. Frederick suffered bites to her arms and hands, with her little finger badly gnawed on by the animal.

“I had my hand around its body and I could not get this thing off,” she said. “It was angry, vicious and incredibly strong.” She eventually shook it off, only for the squirrel to run up a tree and stare at her.

I always wanted to get a yankee flipper, just so I can laugh at the spinning squirrels.

Well, the school bus driver couldn’t shoot them and the kids on the bus had a laugh every day when the bus was pelted with acorns, nuts and stones. Ya gotta admire the squirrel families chutzpah attacking that big yellow thing every morning. Funny thing is, they never went after cars at the stop sign.

Why are NYers so scared of squirrels? Must be something in the “water”.

Reminds me of the Mississippi Squirrel Revival.
https://www.metrolyrics.com/mississippi-squirrel-revival-lyrics-ray-stevens.html

The day the squirrel went berserk
In the First Self-Righteous Church
In that sleepy little town of Pascagoula (Pascagoula)
It was a fight for survival
That broke out in revival
They were jumpin’ pews and shouting Hallelujah! (Hallelujah)
Well seven deacons and then the pastor got saved
And twenty-five thousands dollars was raised
And fifty volunteered for missions in the Congo on the spot, hehe
And even without an invitation
There were at least five hundred rededications
And we all got re-baptized whether we needed it or not

I’m surprised it took 35 posts to suggest rabies.

I hear there is rabies in our area in NH. Some livestock has been diagnosed with it so it must be making the rounds here.

Looks like I’ll have to carry just to do the gardening.

Squirrels like nuts. Maybe that is why they are attacking?

Only squirrels I know are those near the 2nd Avenue 42nd Street Exit and Entrance Ramps of the FDR Drive.

They're black. Cute buggers.

Squirrels have a softer side too. I watched a mom squirrel go across a high wire to get her youngun in the nap of the neck and haul him back to the nest where he belonged. Another time I was parked and watched as a mom squirrel tried to revive her baby that had been killed by a car. Several other little squirrels kept trying to come to her and she would make them back off as she continued her effort to revive her baby. Very sad to watch. I had to leave so don’t know if she finally dragged it off or just left.

The squirrels around here leave everything strictly alone; the cattle feed, chicken feed, garden vegetables, fruit trees, and pecan and walnut trees.

Probably because my dogs like to eat fresh SQUIRREL!

Kind of like mountain sushi.
