Bartenders Name Their Favorite Whiskeys (From Countries Not Known For Whiskey)

While whisk(e)y is a global spirit, it’s mostly made in the United States, Scotland, Canada, Ireland, and Japan. With new expressions dropping daily, you could spend the rest of your life only enjoying bottles from those dram-loving hotbeds. But you’d be doing yourself a disservice.

Because while the “whisk(e)y big five” are historic production hubs for the industry, countries like South Africa, India, Mexico, and even France are all currently producing high-quality whiskeys worth tracking down. Even Sweden is getting in on the action.

In an effort to take a trip around the whisk(e)y world without needing to hop on a plane, we asked a handful of our favorite bartenders to tell us the best whiskeys from countries less known for distilling the brown stuff. Their picks didn’t disappoint — check them all out below.

God created whiskey so the Irish wouldn’t rule the world.

I was never a big whiskey drinker but I always preferred the Canadian blends when I did drink it.

Hibiki is my go to. It is simply better than any other blended whiskey. I have bottles of the 17, and 21 year and a what was once a case of the 12, all of which were purchased during the homobama years.

Now you can't even find the raw stuff, let alone the aged. And even if you can, the prices have inflated into the stratosphere.

Bourbon is the American whiskey I like, but I view it as being in a class of its own, not to be compared to other whiskeys.

Admittedly one of my go-to whiskeys is simply Jack Daniels black label. Not even "Gentleman Jack"... Although I've tried a number of whiskeys - all in the "reasonable" price range not cheap stuff, but not wildly expensive either. Some of my favorites:

For every one listed above there are probably 2 or 3 I've tried and don't care for. Yes, during this pandemic nonsense I've been partaking probably more than I should...

Never, ever drank whiskey...

Vodka, OTOH, lots...
And it has been many, many years since those days... Marriage (1960) put a stop to that...

I've come across exactly one. I will admit that there was one bottle I ended up dumping down the drain. As I mentioned, over the past year I have been sampling various whiskeys a fair amount. My wife decided she wanted to share in my style of libation. She's not a "Whiskey Girl" (hat tip to Toby Keith) but wanted to get in on the fun. I drink my whiskey straight, about an even mix of neat or on the rocks depending on the whiskey and my mood.

My wife heard that peach flavored whiskey was pretty good when mixed with various things so I got her a bottle from a local distillery. It was awful. If you told me they used rotten peaches and processed it through old gym socks I'd believe it. No amount of ice or various mixers could mask the overpowering dank peach flavor. After 3 or 4 attempts to find something that would cut it, we gave up. I did pour probably 3/4 of the bottle down the drain. We got her some peach Crown Royal and she likes that.

Yep, it was my first whiskey when I was seventeen. I’ve liked it ever since. I’ve drank a lot of whiskey in my seventy-five years; many excellent scotches, a lot of good Irish, beau coup boubon, gallons and gallons of cognac, barrels of dark dark rum (my go to drink).
The best I’ve ever had? Waterfill & Frasier 110 Proof 16 Year Old Bottled in Bond. Found a case of it in a liquor store in S. Daytona when I was working at KSC. Bought the whole case. That was over 35 years ago. Smoothest, nicest whiskey I’ve ever had. W&F are long gone. Pity. Spread that case out over ten years though. I also thought Old Grand Dad 101 was a superb tipple.
