PHOENIX — A woman has been arrested after allegedly shooting a Phoenix Ace Hardware employee while attempting to stop two robbery suspects.
According to court paperwork, the incident happened around 9:15 a.m. Saturday, at the Ace Hardware near 32nd Street and Indian School Road.
Police say 45-year-old Nya Reyes was walking her dog in the area of the Ace Hardware when she saw two people running from the store holding items, followed by employees who were yelling at the two people telling them to stop.
Reyes observed the incident and realized the two people looked to be shoplifting.
One of the two alleged shoplifters got into a blue sedan in front of Reyes and began to drive away. The second person followed the vehicle and got in as it was driving away.
Reyes told police that she fired at least two “stop shots” toward the vehicle, in an attempt to disable the vehicle but not hurt anyone.
The vehicle drove away and it was discovered that one of the Ace Hardware employees was shot in his knee by Reyes.
Police say Reyes disabled the weapon and cooperated when they arrived. The employee was taken to the hospital and treated for his injury.
Reyes was arrested and faces charges for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and discharging a weapon within city limits.
No other details on the alleged shoplifters have been released.
She stated that she tried to stop the vehicle...OK...I have seen TV shows where cops shoot at the cars...
I was thinking maybe the employee, who got shot, would sue the lady...But, maybe not...
Anyone with actual gun training knows you don’t fire “stop shots”
Aggravated assault?!
Unlawful discharginf sure - definitely up for a civil suit... but aggravated assault?!
Reyes should pick her spots better.
Wasting it on shoplifters at Ace?
With a deadly weapon. Put a bullet in a random person do the time.
Did she miss the car?
Did the shot ricochet?
Did she point at the employee?
Is that Nya or her dog?
My questions exactly. Unless the store employee was chasing after the car and got in front of her, I don’t know how this went down.
What if she self identified as a Police Officer, would she walk??

In some jurisdictions one is only allowed to shoot to stop.
It’s not legal to shoot to kill.
It’s not legal to shoot to wound.
It’s not legal to shoot to warn.
It’s only legal to shoot to stop.
In some jurisdictions, if you tell them anything, it might be advisable to tell the police you “shot to stop” someone from doing what they were doing rather than tell them you shot to kill, wound or warn.
Definitely no need for deadly force in this situation.
She must have dozed off during that part of her concealed carry class. /sarc
"...looked to be shoplifting..."
Not a good reason to shoot...and BTW, as to the pictured perp:
And women don't have moustaches, but in this case...
I just got my gun permit at the end of the year and was thinking:
1. You shoot only to neutralize the threat. There was no threat here.
2. You don’t fire as a ‘warning’ or to ‘disable’ a vehicle.
3. You are responsible for every bullet you fire until it comes to rest.
Freeing on shoplifters fleeing the scene is not an appropriate use of force in almost any case. She done screwed up.
But “Aggravated Assault”? Complete BS.
Are the two robbers now also chargable with felony assault?
That is a TOUGH BROAD!
“Reyes told police that she fired at least two “stop shots” toward the vehicle, in an attempt to disable the vehicle but not hurt anyone”
Musta missed that part of my CCW class where “stop shots” was covered.
Seriously though....that’s not a thing, and firing a weapon at shoplifters? She made some terrible decisions.
