America, we have another crisis. We’re running out of chicken wings.
Days before the Super Bowl, a veritable annual chicken wing holiday, food service providers are scrambling to get their hands on these delectable morsels — and paying top dollar for them, too.
The U.S. chicken wing market is dominated by the sports calendar. Consumption and sales peak right before the Super Bowl in February and again before the start of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament in March. Prices generally ebb and flow with that schedule, spiking before the competitions and edging lower throughout the rest of the year.
But wing prices have been flying high for months during the coronavirus pandemic. Experts say there are a number of drivers behind the increase, but chief among them is that we’re all eating a ton of chicken, including wings. The shortage isn’t so much that producers aren’t making enough wings, it’s that consumers want more and more (and more) of them to scarf down.

They have had a lot of COVID related issues at the chicken processing plants. My wife’s sister lives near one of those run by Tyson in southwest Missouri.
I know.
This happens every year. Wing prices go up because of - gasp - normal market forces, otherwise known as supply and demand.
Nothing to see here, except to sell advertising space.
What’s a super bowl?
Superb Owl
I know, I just spent the weekend with eight other guys setting strategy for a youth ministry we work with.
None of us were heavy fans. Most were about like me.
Go Brady!
Last Sunday was the finish of the 24 Hours Of Daytona...
Terrific race....winner over 2nd place by 4.704 SECONDS..
After 24 hours-—807 laps—2800++ miles, multiple driver changes, fueling stops prox every 35 minutes, tire changes & weaving thru 4 other classes of slower cars for 24 hours.
IIRC, top 5 places were less than 1 minute apart.
Super Bowl this Sunday MIGHT have an exciting finish, but that was the best race I have seen in a LONG time.
Wow,
That sounds like the NASCAR Busch series championship race a few years ago.
Five drivers had the mathematic chance to win the championship in the last race. Three of them had a real chance.
When the race ended, one driver was about 20 feet from making a pass that would have vaulted him from 2nd place to Champion.
I was a pretty rabid NASCAR fan but gave it up as they went all woke last year. I didn’t need to lectures.
I bought some what was it - last week or the week before? I didn’t notice any shortage.
I wanted to put more money into chicken wing futures, but Robinhood wouldn’t let me!!
I got a hot tip two weeks ago and told my broker to buy 2000 shares of GameStop. He misunderstood and bought shares of Wingstop.
So now I’m not rich. But I do have plenty of chicken wings.
