Green house heater is on. 33 outside 60 inside. Sunny day. I have tomatoes plants started, lettuce, celery, and lots of perennial flowers started. The annuals from two years ago are still doing good. 4 Lemons and the limes are producing fruit this year. I plan to start a bunch more including some cold weather, broccoli, cabbage, etc.

“Compost tea” can also be used to add beneficial bacteria to the soil. It’s just water that has been allowed to steep in compost. The exact recipes vary, with some only running the water thru the compost once, then spreading.

I also use weed tea: I pull weeds put them in a bucket, add water and let it ‘steep’. It smells really bad, but you get the minerals that the weeds rob from the soil. Plus bacteria.
Good morning all from west Michigan. It’s dang cold here - 20 degrees but lots of sunshine.
It’s early to get started where I’m at but I want to see what I can do to prevent/minimize the amount of blight type of things that effect mostly tomatoes and cucumbers. If anybody had any ideas that help I’d love to hear it.
Raised beds have advantages but one of the drawbacks I see is a tendency for these things to build up. We can only rotate crops so much.
Our 50-something degree days this past week have ended. This coming week is going to be colder and on Thursday, the word is we’ll either have a big snow storm .... or a “miss”. I vote for the “miss”!
Walked around the garden last night - the only thing growing is my rosemary bush - very green & looks great. I hope the cold doesn’t get it. I can’t walk by it without rubbing my hand up one of the branches to get the smell - it’s a favorite.
My little great-nieces drew their garden plans up the other day. Their mom is giving each of them a little piece of the big garden for their very own spot. One plan had actual rows/plants on it, the other was just a scribble - when you’re just over two yo, rows/plants aren’t quite happening yet. :-) The Dollar store has some seeds - 4/$1. There aren’t many seeds in the packs, but I think I’ll send each of them a couple of packs of flowers (I saw zinnia seeds) for their garden spots. Being young, they’ll like getting something in the mail and will have some seeds on hand for planting when the weather breaks. At that age, life is so ‘simple’.
Cleaning up the windowsill garden in my kitchen today. I don’t think I am going to replace the two plants that recently died yet. I have seede to start a few thing and will,probably do that in early March to transplant in April one the winter frost has past.

Winter Frost can keep coming to New England till mid-April.
However, I will get some herbs started in my sunro0om prior to that, I hope.
Not getting much ‘gardening’ done, but I do have salad greens, sprouts and re-rooted lettuces growing under lights. Those re-rooted lettuces, I swear, you can actually SEE them grow! Nature wins! Nature wins!
Our BIG project starting this weekend is installing new flooring in the Family Room. ‘The Chairman’ also gave me the OK for new window shades and a new curtain for the patio door - but I am LIKING it being open, and no one will see us but the squirrels, so I may just go with a topper. The slider is still in very good shape for it’s age and is not drafty.
I have graph paper spaced out for garden beds and have been working on that a little bit. I made a bunch of 1” cut-outs I found on line in actual ‘Square Foot Garden’ sizes, so plotting things out should be easy-peasy.
Coldest weather of the season is hitting us this week, but it’s SUNNY, so I don’t care!
4-6” of snow predicted tonight into Sunday morning, then a little more on Monday. It’s totally manageable when it comes in drips and drabs. Now, 18” all at once? No fun for anyone! Been a relatively mild winter; I was expecting worse with the solar minimum and all that. But, no one pays me to be wrong like the Weatherman, so who cares? LOL!

New year new seed catalogs! I ordered some Dill’s Atlantic Giant pumpkin seeds. I’m going to try to grow a 100+ pound pumpkin this year. Why?

When I managed the Garden Center, I had a Stock Boy who was really enthused about gardening, but he had no space at home to do it. I let him use a corner of the property ‘down below’ so it was out of the public view.
I don’t know what his secret was, but that kid grew MONSTER Pumpkins down there and we would bring them up with the FORK LIFT and set them out front in the Fall for decoration.
We had a customer who wanted to buy them all, so he paid us $50 EACH for them! The $ went into our ‘Employee Snack Fund’ and Jeremy was the most popular Stock Boy we ever had, LOL!
