Don Sutton, the curly-haired, wise-cracking Hall of Fame right-hander whose remarkable durability enabled him to amass 324 wins, 3,574 strikeouts and 58 shutouts over 23 major league seasons without the benefit of a blazing fastball, died Monday night according to his son. He had been battling kidney cancer. He was 75. Sutton first contracted advanced kidney cancer in 2008 and had been a national spokesman for the Kidney Cancer Association and the Bayer and Onyx Companies , producers of the drug Nexavar which helped prolong his life for another 13 years.

Great pitcher. Don, please go join Tom Seaver on a nice, comfortable cloud in paradise.
300 wins back when they pitched the entire game. wow.
As a player, I only remember him as a Dodger in the mid to late 70’s. He was already on the backside of 30, but still very effective. He was a very good broadcaster for the Braves during their strong run in the 90’s. RIP.
Wasn’t he pitching in the World Series for the Brewers in 1982?
Yup. They lost Game 7 at St. Louis.
I forgot about his feud with Steve Garvey. Good times. I saw him pitch during his one season in Oakland. R.I.P.
RIP.
Yeah, that’s when the Dodgers starting rotation was so good that the future Hall of Famer was only #3 in his prime (Bert Hooten was #1, Tommy John #2). After we lost John, Bob Welch took the #2 spot.
He also won the fight with Steve Garvey in the locker room.
He was on Match Game (game show from the 1970s) reruns last week.
I hate it, just hate it when they die young.
The Yankees and A’s of that era also had their internal feuds shall we say.
I really enjoyed listening to him during the Braves games.
324 wins—tied with Nolan Ryan for #14 all time. Lowest ERA in MLB in 1980. 58 shutouts (tenth best all time).
Have him in old baseball cards. Remember his name well. Go find Catfish Hunter and Thurman Munson and have a cold one. RIP!
My favorite Don Sutton quote was when he was asked to compare himself to Nolan Ryan. He said “Nolan and I have a pitch in common. My fastball and his change up.”
Yes, he was fine...I watched TBS when it showed Braves games...Sutton worked with Chip Caray...
RIP to him...He was lucky that the cancer drug worked for him...He was able to live for at least ten more years...
RIP
