BEAVERTON, Ore. (KPTV) - An Oregon mother is grateful to have her 4-year-old son back after a thief stole her car with the child inside but came back to return the boy and scold his mother.
Police responded to Basics Meat Market around 9 a.m. Saturday in Beaverton, Oregon. Crystal Leary told them she had gone into the store to quickly grab a couple of items and left her 4-year-old son in the car with the engine running.
While she was inside, a man got into the car and drove off with the boy inside.
Leary says the suspect then drove back to the store and yelled at her, threatening to call the police because she left her son in the car. He ordered her to get the boy out of the car then drove off again.
The boy was not harmed during the ordeal.
“As moms, we get really busy, and we think we’re just running in for a second. This is just a perfect example of letting our guards down and how terribly it could have ended,” Leary said. “So, I’m just thankful that he’s OK. It was so stupid, and I’ll never do that again. But it’s that split second decision that could just change everything.”
Police are looking for the suspect and vehicle. The suspect is described as a white man in his 20s or 30s with dark brown, braided hair. The car is a 2013 silver Honda Pilot with Oregon plates 357GLV.
She left the motor running, too? Well, she learned a valuable lesson.
Honor among thieves, I suppose.
Keep the car. She deserved to loose it. He deserves it for brining the boy back and scolding the mother.
World of difference between a thief and someone who knowingly harms a child.
He’s at least an honest thief. Unlike a commie. A commie would steal your car and sell the kid for drugs after raping it. Then come back and laugh in your face.
In another century, my Mother left my 6 year old older brother and I alone in a car while she ran in.
We managed to put the car into neutral and it rolled out of the parking lot.
He still needs to be caned.
Insanity if you ask me. She was wrong and he was wrong. Or as they say, two wrongs don’t make a right.
Yes.
I was referring to the fact the thief brought the child back to the mother (where he could have been apprehended) AND blessed her out for doing what she did.
I’ve seen stories of the same situation (stolen car with child inside) where the child was either put out somewhere unsafe and alone, or the car abandoned with the child still in it. Either way, the child wasn’t returned to the parent without a manhunt.
If she was just going to be in the store for a couple of items, the damn car would have stayed warm without the engine running and the heater blasting.
Did the mother promptly draw her weapon and shoot dead the kidnapping felon?
Oh, wait, left coast. He probably got a medal for preventing child neglect....
This reminds me of the story of a thief whos stole a brief case containing classified defense info during the run up to the Falklands campaign.
The case was dropped off at the Ministry of Defense with the folowing note:
“I may be a common thief, but I love my Queen and I love my country, and who ever left this briefcase to get stolen should be shot!”
He still took the car.
Just another busy mom...
He is willing to take the heat for stealing a car, but not for stealing a child. For a car theft there usually won’t be any more action that the officer who goes out to take the report. A child abduction results in an Amber Alert with everyone in the metro area informed to be on the look out.
