Explanation: This fantastic skyscape lies near the edge of NGC 2174 a star forming region about 6,400 light-years away in the nebula-rich constellation of Orion. It follows mountainous clouds of gas and dust carved by winds and radiation from the region's newborn stars, now found scattered in open star clusters embedded around the center of NGC 2174, off the top of the frame. Though star formation continues within these dusty cosmic clouds they will likely be dispersed by the energetic newborn stars within a few million years. Recorded at infrared wavelengths by the Hubble Space Telescope in 2014, the interstellar scene spans about 6 light-years. Scheduled for launch in 2021, the James Webb Space Telescope is optimized for exploring the Universe at infrared wavelengths.

oooooo...Nice One! :-)
Reminds me of when my wife spilled a root beer float in the car.
She didn’t drop the cheeseburger did she?
Nope.
But I tell you, root beer in the carpet starts to really stink.
I threw a couple of skunks in the car just to try and cover up the root beer smell.
I gave them each a cheeseburger for their efforts.
And at the tippy top is the god that scaled that mountain, in his long pea coat and policeman's cap, serenading the cosmos while holding a long note, and the microphone in his left hand.
Never mind me. I just see things.
I see the Alien coming out of Ripley’s chest. (Well, either Kane or Ripley anyway).
Ha! That visual will live forever! :-)
Well, I can only say that it, the JWST, is scheduled for a launch attempt this year, currently scheduled for Halloween, 10/31/21. However, for a project that started development in 1996 with a launch date of 2007, one becomes wary and weary of these promises.
STILL, when we look at HUBBLE and NASA's long-life Mars Rovers and the Voyager 1 & 2 pair, we can get spoiled for success. Please God, may this promise lead to a successful mission for Mr Webb's namesake!
Beautiful. Absolutely beautiful!
MtnClimber, thank you so much for bringing all these APOD pictures to FreeRepublic.
Can you imagine what we would know of this universe if they had only taken the other 70 or 80 “Hubbles” and pointed them out instead of down.
When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him? Psalm 8:3-4
