I received a card in the mail today called an Economic Impact Payment card.

It says "Here is your Economic Impact Payment Card enable by Money Network (c). It contains the money you are receiving from the U.S. Department of Treasury under the COVID-related Tax Relief Act of 2020.

IT Costs alot more to produce a card & MAIL it to you than to do direct deposit....

So? The government doesn't care about how much anything they do costs.

That's the part I don't like. I have to activate it before I can even ask any questions. What a crock. It should be the other way around.

I will take it to the bank on Tuesday.

ANSWER: Your bank can tell you if it’s legit. They should be able to tell if it’s real or a scam. Wait until Tuesday and ask a branch manager.

It’s a scam. You’re children and grandchildren will be paying for it for their entire lives.

If you don’t get direct deposit you might get a debit card.

Take a look at the IRS page. They tell you what to expect.

Don’t rely on what some internet poster tells you.

If they sent it with a pin, go to the nearest ATM and empty the card. Not through YOUR bank, but any ATM. Pay the fee, get your cash and run.

Thanks for the link. Right now the federal government is at the top of the list of things that I don’t trust. I will take it to my bank on Tuesday.

Go here to activate it:

https://www.eipcard.com/

It’s legit. I got a card last year. You’d think they’d just reload it but they wasted money by sending out cards again.

If you read the info about the payments at irs.gov, I believe it does say they are sending out debit cards in some situations, so not a scam.

IT Costs alot more to produce a card

Unless there is a sinister plan behind it. In the future it may switch all you account access through that card. Thus, the Gov is in control of your money.
Beware!

Money Network is owned by First Data Corporation and the cards are issued by MetaBank. MetaBank has about 10 brick and mortar branches in South Dakota and Iowa. They compete with Green Dot Bank in the ‘buy your bank account at a Walmart, drug store, or gas station’ market.

I'll take it in on Tuesday. What's interesting is that my name does not contain my middle initial but my wife's does.

I use my middle initial on all my tax filings and other government or financial forms.

My $600 was automatically deposited in my checking account. Are these cards for people who didn’t do that, in lieu of checks?

Bank accounts for folks that don’t have bank accounts or who don’t want the IRS to have their bank account information (a legitimate concern).

The feds have my bank account information because I pay them every April. But for folks that never pay directly, and only get refunds of their over-withholding and don’t provide a bank account number, they frequently end up with a debit card representing a bank account that they don’t realize has been set up for them.

Or, when you buy one of those re-chargeable debit cards at Walmart, etc, the cashier is really a teller setting up a bank account for you.

(Hint - if you are trying to collect money from someone that doesn’t appear to have a bank account, don’t forget to try garnishing accounts at Meta and Green Dot and perhaps some of the other issuers - BB&T is getting into the market, for example.

"Just got an iPhone message to schedule my appointment to get my 1st Covid shot at the University of Michigan."

Was that text issued by the government, or do you normally go there for medical appointments?
