Dorothy Schmidt Cole, who enlisted in the Marine Corps after the bombing of Pearl Harbor and went on to become the oldest living Marine veteran, has died. She was 107.
She had hoped to join the Navy, but at 4-foot-11 she was deemed too short, according to The Charlotte Observer. But the strong-willed woman found another route, learning to fly planes and becoming an early member of the Marine Corps Women’s Reserve.

Semper Fi, Marine. Enter into your well-earned rest.
RIP Dorothy. You’ve earned it.
Semper Fi, Sister.

That’s a great story. It says she learned to fly, but doesn’t mention a flying career, only that she spent two years in the Marines typing notes. Too bad there isn’t more detail.
Women were so classically beautiful back then.
This was a very touching story, thanks for posting it.
Semper Fi, Marine. Well done. Rest In Peace.
God bless Dorothy Schmidt Cole and all of the greatest WWII generation who realized and understood that there are precious things like liberty and freedom worth protecting.
Those who have served and especially the ones who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our country are probably rolling over in their sacred resting sites at what is about to happen to this Republic next week.
BTW, I had a wonderful aunt (my mother’s older sister), also named Dorothy Elizabeth Heinz who was a Navy nurse. She was born July 27, 1913 and passed away on July 17, 2013, just 10 days shy of turning 100 years old. She and I were particularly close as she never had any children and I was born when she was almost 47.
Semper Fi!
RIP.
Thx ...
RIP
